A Common Pasta Accompaniment

Recipes such as this, I am aware, are usually accompanied by some form of pasta, such as spaghetti. The simple reason why they are not in this instance is that I it was only lunch time and I wasn't hungry enough to eat the pasta as well!

If you decide to make spaghetti or any other form of pasta in conjunction with this recipe, however, simply prepare the pasta as instructed on the packet, put it on the plate first and top with the meatballs and tomato sauce.

Meatballs in Tomato Sauce Recipe

It is very common for preparations such as this to be bought either in tins or cans, or pre-made and packaged in some other form. The problem there is that you are introducing all sorts of nasty artificial colours and preservatives in to what is otherwise quite a healthy assembly. It is not difficult to make this meal from scratch. Below I will show you how.

Ingredients

1/2lb (225g) minced or ground beef or steak

1 small shallot (finely chopped)

1 clove of garlic (crushed or finely chopped)

1/2 small beaten egg

2 400g tins of chopped tomatoes in tomato juice

1 tsp chopped fresh basil (or 1/2 tsp of dried)

Salt and pepper to season

Method

Mix the beef, shallot, garlic, egg and seasoning thoroughly together by hand in a large bowl. Shape in to five or six meatballs.

Bring the tomatoes and basil up to a gentle simmer in a larhe saucepan and carefully add the meatballs. Simmer for 20 to 25 minutes until the meatballs are cooked.

Plate up, serve and enjoy.
