One problem that's very prominent right now is obesity, and this disease has been one of the major killers in our society. To help alleviate the problem, lots of diet programs have been formulated that talk about eating the right kinds of food to lose weight. But still, many dieters find it difficult to stay focused on their diets for a number of reasons, but mainly being easy access to junk foods. So, how can you avoid junk food and choose the right foods to eat?

Junks Foods Inside The Home

Remove the tempatations at home when you do encounter a craving. Time to clean out all those chocolate bars, cookies, chips and other junk food that is clearly no good for your body.

It will be tough the next time you have a craving and open your cubboards only to see healthy foods, but that is the price you need to pay to get into shape.

Junk Foods Outside The Home

The best advice to avoid tempation outside the home is to fill your stomach before you even step out. Prepare yourself a healthy sandwich to prevent cravings outside the home. With a full stomach, you will be less likely to shop for junk foods.

Junk Food Aisles: Avoiding the aisles which stock foods such as:

  • chips which are rich in salt
  • TV dinners which are rich in preservatives
  • pastries which are rich in sugars, etc.

If you're on a diet, you will only be torturing yourself when passing by these aisles because you'll crave for them. Do yourself a favour and avoid them completely.

Fast-Food Restaurants: Of course, if you avoid these kinds of restaurants then you wont be tempted to consume high-fat and salt content foods. Sure it will be tough next time you are out, but you need to have the willpower to avoid these type of restaurants. A Big Mac contains 590 calories, or over 1/4 the average recommended daily intake of 1940 calories for women (2550 for men).

Some of the popular fast foods and their calorie levels are:

  • 1020 : Burger King Double Whopper w/ Cheese
  • 630 : McDonald's McFlurry
  • 590 : McDonald's Big Mac
  • 540 : McDonald's French Fries (large)
  • 450 : McDonald's French Fries (medium)
  • 430 : Burger King Coca Cola Classic (king)
  • 254 : Subway 6" Turkey Breast

So if you really need to partake in fast food, try going for Subway meals.

Food Labels

This is often an overlooked strategy when grocery shopping. By looking at the contents of the food you're purchasing, you can calculate the caloric intake as well as know which foods to avoid that are high in salt and fat.

You can also see the nutrients as well as vitamins that foods contain.

It really pays to know these strategies as losing weight is not an easy process. It will require determination and focus on your part to achieve your weight goals. So start having discipline in yourself and reap the benefits of a slimmer you.

Nice Hubpage. You make some very common sense observations that we tend to forget about in our busy daily lives. I gave you a thumbs up to help your rating.

Hi some good tips there mate, I just wanted to add one thing if it was ok. In the Uk the cost of a lot of food has rocketed over the last 18 months because of the current credit situation.

Several surveys state that people on lower incomes tend to eat unhealthy food compared to higher income earners. I know people will say that everyone has access to move to some sort of healthy diet, but organic food was more expensive than normal food, before all these financial problems.

Now it is going to be even more difficult for people on low incomes to buy healthy food.Unless something really drastic is done I can't see an end to the obesity problems people are having.
