Dogs don't always adjust the way that we expect them to when we change residence. But sometimes they can be the hardest to get them to adjust then humans. When a dog's life is interrupted by a move or anything that they are not used to it can be very frustrating not only to the dog but the entire family. Dogs don't like to have their routine that they follow changed and don't adjust to change as well as humans do. But there are some things that you can do to make a move for your dogs easier for everyone. Sometimes it's not even anything as drastic as a move that would disrupt their routines, just boarding your dog in a kennel for a few days the dog can suffer from anxiety attacks and separation anxiety.
Always pack a doggy bag when you are moving, with their favorite toys, blankets and treats. This way when you get to the new place it will already be packed for them to enjoy and will let them know that this will be where they are going to stay and with their favorites. When moving or boarding a dog take their favorite toys and blankets with them. They will have comfort with the scent of familiar surroundings and their family. If they have special treats that you give them, make sure they are handy for the dog. You want to make them feel like they are still at home in a way with the least amount of daily disruption as possible.
If you are moving with the dog the first thing that you want to make sure of with the dog is that if you take them outside to explore their new surroundings that you have them contained, or on a leash for their own safety. They will want to explore their new neighborhood immediately. They will take you on more walks than usually sniffing everything to see if there have been other dogs there before them. This is normal. They are in a way just like children they want to see if they can meet the neighbors and other pets that may be around there.
There is nothing worse then losing a dog after a move and knowing they are lost in unfamiliar surroundings. While the dog is inside, double check the all the doors and windows to make sure that they can not jump up and open the door themselves. Dogs will escape from new places if they are scared and left alone. They will try to come and find you where or sometimes they will find their way back to the old residence. This is important thing to do and until my dog escaped from my new residence while I was gone, I would have never thought about this step. Luckily my dog was fine, but it was still very scary for both of us.
The best way to get your dog to adjust is to spend a few days home with them before leaving them alone all day while you are at work. Take them for extra walks if you can while you are home so you can assure them that everything will be all right and will help with the adjustment that they have to make. This will make the adjustment faster for them and make it easier for them once you do go back to work.
It usually takes about a week for a dog to adjust to new surroundings and to feel comfortable again. Try to leave them alone for small time frames till they get used to their surroundings. This way you can know that when you do leave for work for all day that they will be ok.
Adjustments will take time, but soon the family and the dogs will all feel comfortable about in the new surroundings and everyone will feel at home again.
Keep your dog safe with good obedience training. This has worked well for my dog and will for your dog also. There is nothing better than having a well behaved pet when you go out in public. Learn the tricks from the master and quickly teach your dog good manners.
