If what you took home from your last hiking trip were nothing but sore muscles, an aching back and blistered feet, there’s a good chance that you may want to swear never to go hiking again.

But this should not be. Hiking, if properly prepared for and if practiced with safety precautions, can truly be a gratifying experience. And to make sure that you have one that’s memorable and enjoyable, here are some tips on how to prepare for your next hiking adventure:

  1. Prepare yourself physically. Do exercises prior to your hiking trip to strengthen up the muscles which you’ll use to walk many miles. Bicycling is a great way to shape you up. This will build up your stamina as well as minimize the risk of injuries like sprained ankles or knee pains.
  2. Nourish yourself well before the trip. Remember, you need the nourishment and the energy to keep going throughout the hike. You can’t do this if you’re feeling sluggish due to malnutrition.
  3. Have plenty of good quality rest. Be sure to get some good night’s sleep several nights before the trip.
  4. Practice hiking. This will give you an idea on how far you can go. It’s also a good idea to practice hiking on uneven ground to exercise your ankles. Do this several times before your trip.
  5. Buy reliable hiking gear. A good quality gear can spell the difference between a worthwhile hike and a hike you want to bury into oblivion.
  6. Prepare your things. Food, water and first aid kit should be on top of this list. Be sure to bring sufficient food and water to keep yourself energized and hydrated at all times.
  7. Don’t forget to pack a map, compass, cell phone, whistle and fire starters. A map and a compass will guide you throughout your hike. Your cell phone will come in handy in case you need to call for help. (Just turn it off and bury deep into the bottom of your backpack so it won’t bother you.) You can use the whistle to signal your location in case you get lost while the fire starters like matches can keep you comfortably warm.
  8. Study your route. Just because you have a map does not mean you don’t have to study your route before your hike. Knowing your route will make your trip safer and more enjoyable.
  9. Check the weather report. Even in summer, you can’t predict that the weather would always be sunny. If you’re not prepared, a surprise rain pour may spoil your hiking trip.
  10. Learn some wilderness survival skills. There are many available resources online regarding different wilderness survival skills that you can read and study about. You should study which insects and fruits are edible and how to start a fire using sticks or stones. These skills can save your life.

The breathtaking scenery, fresh air and wonderful warmth of the sun all make hiking a worthwhile activity. Just be sure you’re in top shape and have prepared properly for your next hiking adventure.
