I read 2 or 3 books per week and as a result I have pretty eclectic tastes. I Usually like to read books that are parts of series. Below are some of my favourite book series.

Neal Stephenson: The Baroque Cycle

Consisting of 9 books which are part of 3 volumes (confusing I know but It works as the volumes move from one book to another seamlessly)

The books are

Quicksilver

The Confusion

System of the World

Full of real and not so real characters these books at over 2,700 pages are a true modern classic.

Conn Iggulden: The Emperor Series

A fictionalised account of the lives of Caesar and Brutus great read from a master storyteller. The great thing about this series is that i loved it, my wife loved it and my daughter who was 12 at the time loved it as well. He has now started a new series about the Life of Ghengis Khan.

The Gates of Rome

The Death of Kings

The Field of Swords

Gods of War

Bernard Cornwell

Bernard Cornwell is the master of the historical series. There is not a series of his I haven't read and not one I don't yearn for another episode. Obviously the Sharpe series are probably the most well known because of the Tv series. But the other novels shouldn't be over looked. Strangely one of my favorites is a non series book Gallows Thief. The hero has just returned from the Battle of Waterloo and is down on his luck. He is asked to investigate a murder where the convicted man is due to hang in 6 days time.

The latest series of book is the saxon chronicles based in the time of King Alfred and the Viking settlement of England it is a fast paced well written series with lots of great characters. Pure Cornwell

I wish I have time to read 2-3 books per week! I used to read much more when I was young, then was a period that I didnt read at all. Then I read a post on some blog - don't even remember where - "One Book Every Week" - about how to motivate myself to read every day. It worked, now a do exectly 1 per week but not more (

Some really great titles there - I'll definitely be keeping an eye out. I love the Cornwall "Arthur series"!

Another great piece of historical fiction I read recently was "El Tigre" by John Manhold. It's what some might call a western but it has so much more to it than that. It traces the life of Johann Heinrich von Manfred from Spain to the Americas and all the adventures he gets up to along the way. Full of action and adventure, but the best part is the way Manhold seamlessly weaves in historical references. Well worth a look!
