Summer is over, school has begun and so has the head Lice hunting season. Your kids come running in scratching their heads and you already fear the worst. And yep the infamous lice family chose your kid's head to build themselves a new, comfortable, warm home. But this time they are out of luck, you have no compassion; show no mercy for this cozy, idyllic family dwelling
"Somebody's gotta move!"
"This place ain't big enough for all of us, so somebody's got to go." Tough words from a loving mom
I'm right behind you, and these 6 shots are proven home remedies for head lice and they will help you get rid of these unwanted tenants
1. Coconut oil – Warm up some virgin coconut oil, let it cool down and really soak your kid's hair in it and also massage it into the scalp. Cover the head with a towel or plastic wrap. Leave it on for a few hours or even for the night. Afterward wash it with coconut oil or tea tree shampoo
2. Listerine (yes, the mouthwash) - Experts say that the alcohol, eucalyptol, thymol, menthol and methyl salicylate in Listerine are probably toxic to lice
First wash your hair and towel-dry it. Soak and rub your head and hair with Listerine. Cover the head with a towel or plastic wrap and leave it in for the night. Use coconut or tea tree oil shampoo to wash it out to be double sure
3. Full fat mayonnaise - Apply it liberally to the hair, until every strand is thickly covered. Wrap the head/ hair in plastic wrap. Leave it in overnight and in the morning thoroughly wash it, again with coconut oil or tea tree shampoo (of course…)
4. Vinegar - This is also a tested and very useful remedy, helps to solve the glue that keeps the lice eggs or nits stuck to your hair shaft
You can simply rub your head and hair with straight up vinegar and leave it in for a few minutes. Then wash it out
5. Cetaphil non-soap facial cleanser -This is a relative newcomer among the home remedies for head lice. But it has proven very effective
Generously apply it to your hair, and leave it on for two minutes. Now comb your hair and take the excess cleanser out of it. Use a blow dryer to gently dry out the cleanser. This way the Cetaphil will harden and works as a "shrink wrap" that suffocates the lice. Leave it for eight hours, or overnight and then shampoo it out
Studies have shown that more than 90%(!!) of all lice cases were solved after using this method
6. Tea tree oil – Very powerful, so be very careful when treating children. The general rule is to drop 6 drops of tea tree oil in a little more than 10ml of shampoo. Wash your hair with this and keep it in for a few minutes and then rinse it out and repeat it one more time
Since tea tree oil is very potent stuff you should keep it away from children and only use it as long as absolutely necessary
A sure shot would be to could mix and apply coconut oil with a few drops of tea tree oil. I don't think there's a deadlier mix for head lice than this
Comb and screen
No matter which head lice treatment you choose, after washing you will always have to screen and comb the hair with a metal lice comb to get all the lice and nits out of there. After each time you have used it, clean the metal lice comb with alcohol
For most people 1 treatment will be enough. Although it can still be a good idea to do it 3 days in a row to kill eventual new eggs or lice that come from other infested places like pillows, beds etc. And you have to keep checking though for nits for the next 2 weeks
That's it, the town is safe, the bad guys are gone and sharp shootin' mom and her home remedies for head lice have saved the day. Now nature must have some good use for these itchy little critters, but next time they'd better set up camp somewhere else; 'cause there's a new sheriff in town
