Home security: A dog can be your best friend when it comes to home security.

Having a burglar alarm is not the end station when it comes to home security. Are you aware that you may have many options still open which are very cheap and very effective in order to keep the burglars out.

The entry points are the points to focus upon.

You need locks on your door which are tamper-resistant. Secondly you need secured hinges and a door made out of strong and solid material. This material shouldn't be plastic or glass of course. Ideally, you should have an extra deadbolt that you put on at night, made from very strong metal.

Than we have the windows. These should be made from a stronger glass kind; toughened glass. Best is that these are double-glazed. If they are, they are almost impossible to break into pieces. And have you ever heard of window locks? Not many people do. These prevent the windows from being opened and therefore increase the security issue considerably in your home security project if you install them.

If your house has windows in a position where they can be easily and discreetly accessed from the street, such as basement windows, you should consider putting metal bars on them. It is also important for your garden to be secure, as far more burglars enter through the back of your house than the front. High anti-climbing fences and the use of spikes and / or anti-climb paint should do a perfect job to keep burglars out of your house. If fences are no option for you, you can also use big hedges.

Have you ever heard of a burglar who actually enjoys entering a house where he/she knows there is a dog as well? Almost every burglar will avoid entering a house like this. Which makes this method probably one of the best home security measures thinkable. A big sign "beware of the dog" will do the job. It actually speaks for itself that you don't want a very little dog to do this job. You need a medium to large size dog. Think of a German shepherd, Rottweiler, pit-bull or a bloodhound. These are dogs that make me already think twice to even consider something like this. These dogs are known for their strong guard instincts and their 'love' for strangers with bad intentions.
