Make your own pizza!

The first question that comes to your mind right now is probably "Why?", and it is a legitimate qustion too! Why would anyone go through the trouble of making their own pizza when you can easily order one and it will be brought to you in 20 minutes. The answer is quite simple: "Because it is a whole lot of fun!" You and your girlfriend/boyfriend can spend a fun and romantic afternoon by making your own pizza instead of ordering in, you can also call your friends over and enjoy a couple of beers and a good football game while eating a homemade pizza, you can also surprise your family with one, you can also make it for yourself if you are bored... the posibilities are endless!

What do you need for a good pizza?

There are five basic things you need to know in order to make a great pizza:

* How to make the dough or crust?

* How to make a good sauce?

* What are the best toppings for a good pizza?

* How the pizza is assembled?

* How it is baked?

How to make the pizza dough?

Ingridients for a good pizza dough:

1 package active dry yeast

1 cup warm water

3 cups all-purpose or bread flour

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon of olive oil

* Add the warm water in the large bowl of a heavy duty electric mixer. Sprinkle on the yeast and let sit for 5 minutes until the yeast is dissolved and stir to dissolve completely if needed after waiting for a couple of minutes.

* Attach a mixing paddle to the mixer. Mix in the olive oil, flour, salt and sugar on low speed for about a minute. Remove the mixing paddle and replace with a dough hook. Knead using the mixer and dough hook, on low to medium speed, until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. If you don't have a mixer, you can mix and knead by hand.

* Place ball of dough in a bowl that has been coated lightly with olive oil. Turn the dough around in the bowl so that it gets coated with the oil. Cover with plastic wrap. Let sit in a warm place until it doubles in size for about 60 to 90 minutes. If you wish you can also warm up the owen and place the bowl of dough in the warmed owen to rise.

If yoo don't think you will be able to do this on your own or you just don't have the time for it, buy a frozen pizza dough in the store and use it instead of making your own dough. It is still better than ordering a pizza!

What is a good pizza sauce?

There are many sauces you can make for your pizza with a lot of different ingridients, but i tend to be a traditionalist when it comes to a piza sauce. We all know that making a pizza is fun, but we don't really need to make it complicated and frustrating. You can simply use one of the ordinary sauces you may already have in your own kitchen:

* Olive oil

* Chili oil

* Teriyaki sauce

* Dijon mustard

* Hoisin sauce

* Taco sauce

* Ranch dressing

* Tomato sauce

* Ketchup

You can combine some of these common sauces to create a great and delicious pizza sauce.

How to choose toppings for your pizza?

Anything can pass for a good pizza topping, but the real question is not what to put on a pizza, but how you put it and how much of it you should put?

You can put almost all kinds of cheese on your pizza, but you should be very careful with it. It is best to use mild cheeses like Edam, Gouda, Mozzarella or Muenster and you can put them in bigger amounts. If you are using more pungent cheeses like Brie, Cheddar, Goat Cheese, Limburger or Parmesan it is better to use smaller amounts. You can even combine more kinds of cheese if you are a cheese fan!

When it comes to meat the rules are very much alike when it comes to cheese. You can use all kinds of meat, wheter it is cooked or grilled before or not. I personaly like salamis like bacon, prosciutto, ham, beef, different sausages or kulen sausage. You can also put some seafood on a pizza like anchovies, shrimp, mussels or tuna fish.

There is also a wide choice of vegetables to put on a pizza. You have mushrooms (although there are some people who don't like them, I don't know why), olives, chilli peppers, paprika, tomatoes, onion and any basically any other vegetable you like.

Like I said before, you can put pretty much anything on a pizza, it is up to you, you just need to be carefull not to overdo it cause the result could be a real "pizza disaster".

Final steps in making a pizza!

Take the dough and use your hands to flatten it on a slightly floured surface. You can either shape it into a round shape like they do in the restaurants or you can make it into a rectangular shape if you wish. After that brush the top of the dough with olive oil to prevent it from getting soggy from the toppings. Then use your finger tips to press down and make dents along the surface of the dough to prevent bubbling and let it rest another 5 minutes. Now comes the fun part! You spoon on the sauce and place your desired toppings on the pizza. This is the most fun and most important part of making a pizza. It is best that you imagine how all the things you are putting on the pizza would taste together and be carefull not to exaggurate. It should all in the end amount to a great personalized pizza that you couldn't ever get from any restaurant! Now all it takes is to put the pizza into the owen and bake it for about 10-15 minutes until the crust is browned and the cheese is golden. After the pizza is baked you can put some extra garnishes like ketchup, chilli, olive oil or salsa on it to make the taste richer and fuller.

Your first homemade pizza is now ready to be served! Enjoy your meal!
