In recent past, say, in past few decades, awareness among people about homeopathy has increased enormously. This has led to mushrooming of institutions, practitioners and dispensaries in this field. As per an estimate, there are about 150 Homoeopathic teaching institutions, 1,86,000 Practitioners, about 20,000 dispensaries and approximately 850 manufacturing units..Experts believe that the rise in quantity of education facilities has not been commensurate with quality. There are more than a hundred institutions for imparting training at Degree level courses and about 15 institutions at PG level with a total intake of about 7000 per year. Since best colleges can be counted on finger tips, There is a need to enforce regulations and minimum standards to maintain quality education in the country.

The Government of India constituted the Central Council of Homoeopathy in the year 1974 to maintain a Central Register of Homoeopathy and matters connected therewith, through enactment of the Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973.

The Council is an authority to enforce regulation relating to professional conduct, etiquette and code of ethics.and to prescribe the "Minimum Standards" to be maintained by all the Homoeopathic educational institutions to undertake the following courses.

1. Degree Course of 5 and 1/2 years duration (BHMS),
2. Diploma Course of 4 years duration (DHMS). However, diploma course is being phased out as no fresh admissions are allowed to Diploma Course.
3. Graded Degree Course, a bridge course for the Diploma holders to acquire higher proficiency of degree.

Post Graduate Education in Homoeopathy began through Homoeopathy (Post Graduate Course) M.D.(Hom.) Regulation 1989. At present, specialization is permitted in three disciplines namely: Materia Medica, Homoeopathic Philosophy and Repertory. Four more subjects namely, Pediatrics, Medicine, Psychiatry and Pharmacy has been added through an amendment as subjects for PG course.
