Some things to consider before starting to homeschool

Many parents have thought about homeschooling at some point or another. If you are one of these parents who are thinking about homeschooling, here are some things that you will definitely need and want to consider:

1.The first thing that you need to consider is whether or not you can actually afford to homeschool. This will affect you in a few different ways.

a.If you are willing to take an eclectic approach to homeschooling you will find the cost will be minimal. In fact, you can almost homeschool for free if you use the library a lot. On the other hand, if you choose to purchase curriculum the price starts at around $300. Of course, you can cut this price in half by purchasing used materials.

b.The greatest cost comes in the loss of an income. However, in today's digital age it is possible to get a work at home job.

c.The last cost that you will have to endure is one of personal sacrifice. As a family you will have to adapt to a home-centered lifestyle. However, the numerous options and resources that are available to you will probably amaze you.

2.The second thing that you will want to know is where you can find other homeschool families. Well, the good news is that 2 million children in the United States are homeschooled. This number is expected to grow around 15% per year. So, obviously people in every county of every state in this country are homeschooling. Thus, you will be able to find a homeschool group in your area that fits your family. While you may not get along with everyone in this group, you are sure to make some friends. You can usually find someone who knows of such groups by simply asking around.

3.Your third question may very well have to do with curriculum. To begin with you should know that curriculum is simply an outline of topics to cover. A lot of families do not even use curriculum. These families either created their own curriculum or use none at all.

4.Fourth, you may be wondering who can help you make the decision of whether or not to homeschool. Ultimately this is a decision that only you and your family can make. One important thing to consider here is how much you actually like being with your child. This may sound silly but you have to realize that if you homeschool you are going to be with your children every hour of every day. Some other things to consider here is if your partner supports your homeschool efforts. You also need to do a lot of reading about homeschooling so that you know what will be expected of both yourself and your children.

5.Now you may be wondering how to talk to your children about this decision. This is important because you will be taking them out of school. So, for younger children you will need to take time to talk about this and make a very slow transition. However, older children may actually look forward to this transition as their friends will oftentimes tell them that they are lucky and cool because they are homeschooled.
