How to homeschool while on a budget

Many people are interested in homeschooling their children but get turned off when they see the high cost of pre-packaged curriculum. This is because most of these packages cost hundreds of dollars. However, it is important to understand that you do not have to pay for this curriculum if you are willing to do a little planning and thinking.

Once you begin to plan for your homeschool you will need to fist decide what you are going to teach your your children. If you were to purchase one of these pre-packaged curriculum packages, you would not have to give this any thought. However, you can find this information for free online if you are willing to spend a few minutes searching for it. This is because the majority of the school systems have web sites that will tell you what your child will be learning each year. A lot of these web sites also have a section that is dedicated to helping homeschoolers within their district stay on track. Of course, there are also some books that you can check out of the library to read about what your child should learn each year.

Once you have decided upon what you will be teaching your child, it is time to figure out how you are going to teach these things. One idea is to go to your library and pick out some good books on the topic. The Internet is also another option for you. Both ways you will be able to have vocabulary lists and questions available to you. Another idea is to look for workbooks and study guides at your library and then copy these pages so that you can use them at home. There are also many web sites that have educational pages that you can print out. Herein it is beneficial to join homeschool forums so that you can learn from others and share your great finds with them as well.

Of course, you are also going to need some supplies. Most of these supplies can actually be picked up at your local dollar store. If you need to purchase things such as high power calculators or computer programs, then you should do so whenever stores are having back to school sales. You will also want to see if any of the stores near you offer teacher discount cards that you can use as a homeschooler. This will save you a percentage of your purchase. Take some time to also check out local thrift shops and second hand stores too. You will be surprised to find craft supplies, tools, and books there that you can use. This works the same with any book sales that are taking place in your area. Here you will be able to purchase out of date books for just a few dollars. Usually these books are still relevant.

As you can see, you will only spend a small fraction of the money that pre-packaged curriculum would cost you. Nevertheless, you will still be able to provide your child with a great homeschool education. You just need to learn how to be both resourceful and creative.
