Homeschool Schedules
79How to create a homeschool schedule that works for you
Whenever you are attempting to create a schedule for your homeschool there are certain things that you need to consider: the areas of instruction, your child's age, and your family's schedule. These things should be used to help you create a schedule that you can live with. You will also need a good calendar. This is especially important if you are going to have a "school at home." Nevertheless, you should remember that your day does not have to start at 8am.
If you want to have "school at home," then you will need to begin by developing a mission statement. Once you have a mission statement, you can do some research about the topics that you plan to teach so that you will know how much time to allow for each. This can then be transferred to your weekly calendar. You should also plan for at least 30 minutes of physical activity for your children each day.
You are going to need to add some flexibility into your schedule. This is especially true since you want to plan around the aforementioned items. Another thing to consider is the fact that you can take a vacation any time of the year. So, you may wish to go on vacation when the public school children are in school and the cost of air fare is lower.
Of course, you are also going to need to allow for unforeseen breaks and absences. You should not fret over these things though, because just as there are going to be some unforeseen missed hours, there will also be days when homeschooling is going so well that you continue on well past the time you had allotted for that day. So, it is best that you realize that there are going to be some rough edges but if you keep good records and allowed your lesson plan to guide you, your child will receive a good education.
Another thing that you are going to have to watch out for, since you are home all day, is other people dropping by unexpectedly for a visit, other people wanting you to watch their kids, pick them up from somewhere, give them a ride somewhere, etc. You will really need to guard against these things on a daily basis otherwise you are always going to feel as though you are behind where you would like to be with you homeschool schedule and lesson plans. It may even appear as though you have scheduled too much when this is not the case. All this is going to do is create unnecessary stress for both you and your child. So, carefully guard against this! Remember, it is fine to let the phone go unanswered and leave your email for later. If you are having a traditional homeschool, your child is going to truly need you.
Creating your homeschool schedule for the first time can be nerve racking. This is because your brain is on overdrive. While you may create a very rigid schedule to begin with you will soon allow both you and your children to relax some. Even though you have all of this great information at hand, your creativity will actually prove to be your best resource. So, instead of getting upset when things do not go as you had planned, simply use your creativity to work your homeschooling around the unexpected circumstance.
Whatever you decide that your schedule should look like, you need to relax and be yourself. The most important thing is that your children feel loved. With this in mind you cannot constantly worry about doing everything 'the right way.' Something is always going to come up and it should simply be treated as a part of life, just another learning experience.
