Why Build Muscle Mass At All?

You might be asking yourself why should I want to build muscle at all right? Chances are you don’t want to be in a Mr. Macho competition and show off how huge your muscles are and most men and women don’t really want to look like a huge body builder type with muscles bulging out everywhere. Instead most people would just like to have nice muscle tone and definition, a great flat stomach with some nice abs and look healthy and sexy at the same time. Well, that is the exact reason that you need to build muscle. You see muscles burn fat and calories more then not having muscles. So yes you can do cardio and while you are doing cardio workouts you burn fat. However, once you stop the workout the fat burning benefits start to recede. However, with muscle mass you keep burning calories and fat all day long even if you are just sitting there. If you increase your muscle mass you will burn more calories and lower your body fat. Therefore it is important to have a good cardio workout and program but don’t be mislead into thinking muscles are just for those weight lifter guys who want to be huge.
We have broken down some of the important elements that you should consider when you choose a muscle building program.

The Basic Approach

The first thing you want to consider is the overall approach of the program. There are many different ways to develop a muscle building program. So what is the overall approach that this program is based on? For example does it use a HIT, or High Intensity Training where the idea is to push yourself hard for short period of time or is it founded more on a Periodization model that builds your intensity over time slowly.

Body Types

Another thing to consider before starting or even purchasing any program is target body type of the program? Often programs are meant to be for a certain body type and it does not work as well for other body types. In other words if you are a skinny guy that can’t gain weight you are going to want a different program then a guy who is overweight and needing to slim down. These are two of the most common body types and there are very different training programs needs. You want to carefully consider if the plan takes into consideration your body type and special training for it.

Nutrition Plan

Another important aspect of any muscle building program is the nutrition plan. The actual workout is only a percentage of the total routine needed to build muscle. The nutrition and eating plan is just as important. Without a good nutrition plan your body can not recover and build new muscle quickly. You need to eat properly to fully charge the body to recover, heal and build bigger and without a nutrition plan this cannot happen.

Rest and Recovery

Rest and recovery are crucial steps in building muscle also. The actual workout breaks the muscles down and tears the muscle fibers. The rest and recovery period is where your body builds new muscle. Without a good rest and recovery plan you are prone to over training which can quickly lead to injuries. The amount of time needed for recovery and proper rest needs to be configured in any plan. If it is not there you are likely to train to hard.

Supplementation

Supplementation can be an important part of a training program also. The supplementation plan should look carefully at the nutrition plan and show where you might need to add supplements such as creatine, protein powder and vitamins into your overall routine. This will help you to gain muscle faster and recover more quickly and depending on your body type lose weight or gain weight more easily. This needs to be tied in with the nutrition, recovery phases and body type consideration to be at all effective.

As you can see there are at least five things that you should consider carefully before you purchase a muscle building program. You want to know how the program will deal with all of these factors up front before you purchase. If the plan is missing any of these crucial pieces it won’t be effective. So be prepared to ask questions and make sure you really know the program before you throw your money, time and effort away on a program that is missing pieces.
