Activities to Find Out What You Are Good At

What you might like to do first is take tests to see what you're good at. We have a place called "Curative Workshop" locally which will test you academically and for employability skills. I know about this because I took the tests personally and got pretty high marks in all areas.

Math was actually the lowest, but it was still above normal. I also remember doing the mechanical test and passing well above normal. However, my highest area was no surprise to me--literature and the arts--as I had always did well in it. The big surprise was I could do well at just about any job from my score.

However, most people usually will be pointed toward one field or another directly, as mine told me I would do best in literature. If you can find a place such as a curative workshop in your county, go try it! Ask your local government where the nearest place to do so.

There are also many places online that can test you for job skills and what you like to do versus what you don't. For example, careerbuilder.com links to a test that asks about what you like to do in a job. If you do an internet search for either "job skill test" or "job personality test" or something similar you are bound to find plenty of tests--just be careful of what site they're from--they should be from a job site or a psychological test site to be more relevant.

Also find out what you like to do and try doing it at home. You can try carpentry, working on cars, computer activities, and much more at home. My brother got a job assembling lawn mowers because he practiced mechanic skills at home on cars. Computer skills at least will get access to any educational courses online, ability to write for money, access to job listings, and maybe even help you build your own web page.

Another great resource to help you are the "for Dummies", "The Complete Idiots Guide to", "Teach Yourself......in 24 Hours", "The Everything Understanding", and other book series teach about the basics of just about everything. If you find you're good at something in these, try purchasing a more advanced book covering the entire topic.

Practice helps, too. If you find you have skills in any particular area, practice them and you will get better and better at it.

Also seek the advice of others. If you do something and show it to someone who will tell the truth and see the positive side of your project, find out what they think about the good side of the project and ask what they think can be improved.

Why I say the positive side is the fact you have to be careful who you ask--you don't want someone who is out to flatter you or someone who is overly critical. People who right away tell you the negatives are not a good judge of your work. These people need to be able to see both good and bad in your project and give helpful suggestions on how to make it better without discouraging you from improving. In other words find someone honest, but not bluntly so.

Another way to make sure to get in touch with people in the field as they can offer relevent advice on your topic. They can also tell you what skills you need and what education you need to get further in the area.

That is all the advice I can give for now. May you have a successful run in whatever you decide to do!
