how can the detroit tigers not win the american league championship?
49tigers over red sox, pistons over celtics?
last year they added sheffield, which was big. he had kinda an off year. he'll be fine to hit as always.
this off-season they go out and grab the best hitter in the senior circuit not named pujols (miguel cabrera). for fun, they add renteria at short. a great hitter, a good fielder, a proven winner. what this also does is lets carlos guillen move from ss and he can now concentrate on hitting from both sides as he does so well. this also will take most of the stress off his right shoulder, which would affect him more from the left side of the plate.
to add insult to injury (if you're a red sox fan like me), the tigers have the best manager in the american league. i love my boy terry francona, but he is no leyland. too often people believe that a baseball manager has more of an impact on the game than they actually do. what you want out of a manager is not for them to win you games, the players win you games. you want your manager to not lose you games.
don't even get me started on the tiger's pitching staff. it's solid enough, then they grab dontrelle willis. he will have to pitch to some great lineups, but he has the advantage, as a lot of guys don't have a lot of at-bats against him. look for him to cruise through april. it's too cold to hit in half of the country, especially d-town and his ball-park is a pitcher's second best friend. if his sinker is working, he has a better fielder and arm behind him at the toughest position (ss) and polanco turns the ball over well at second. but, the only down to miguel cabrera's game is his glove (moreso his foot work). they say he's a little lighter this year, which will help him move side to side. big guys can and have played great third (schmidt, rolen). they need miguel to do what scott rolen used to do, when he played basketball - side shuffles and suicides. that will make him very quick sideways. and anybody who is as good a hitter as miguel cabrera is has to have very good, soft hands.
i do like the pickup of sean casey by my boy theo epstein. but, remember he was a tiger, so that means if they don't need him and we do, the tigers right now are a better team than the red sox. since my family hails from michigan and i was born there, i'm okay with it. i would love to see a detroit-boston matchup. i think that's what it will be not only for mlb, but also the nba.
and it could be boston vs. new york in the championship in two sports: mlb and nfl. wowsers.
oh, yeah and one more note, the guy who throws like 104 mph, Joel Zumaya, Heeee's Baaack. damn, i wish the red sox drafted him.
