In this economic downturn $500 is really a gift for your family at the end of every month. But this $500 will only come from your monthly income and expenditure (Don’t think it will come from other sources-$500 will be a byproduct from your budget.) if you and your spouse give a close eye on the monthly budget.
There are two types of expenses- fixed expenses and the other is variable expenses. For the fixed expenses (e.g. housing) you cannot do anything. But you can give hand on the monthly or weekly variable expenses. Variable expenses are groceries, food, clothing, shopping, DVD rent, car fuel, internet bill, cell phone bill etc.

Here are some special economic tips to save $500 or $1000 every month and these tips need you and your spouse’s special attention:
1. Cut Down Your Grocery Bill:
Most of the expenses of a family are for the groceries. List your family meals and necessaries every week and buy according to the list. That will save you $50 per month.
2. Shop Once a Week:
The more you go to the store, the more you are to buy on impulse because there are more tempting items for you in the store. That will save you $20-$30 per week and $80-$120 per month.
3. Stop Drinking Bottled Water:
Just give up drinking bottled water because it is the biggest waste of money ever. Instead buy a filter for your tap and use reusable bottle in case you go out. You can save $15 to $20 per month.
4. Share a Ride:
Car-pooling can save as much as $50 each month or more. Check with your friends, neighbors or colleagues to see whether they are interested in car-pooling. If you don’t see any one nearby than check at carpoolworld.com and erideshare.com.
5. Buy Restaurant Coupons:
Many of the people in the United States eat out twice a week. You don’t need to stop going to the restaurant to be frugal. Just take the advantage of some of the buy-one-get-one free or 20%-off coupons stuffed into newspapers or check out the restaurant.com. Restaurant.com offer discounts at more than 8,500 restaurants in the United States. You can save up to $100.
6. Bring Your Lunch to Work:
According to the U.S. Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, bringing lunch to work costs about 45-50 percent less than buying it. Your budget will be seriously affected if you buy the lunch every day during the work week. You can save as much as $50 per month by bringing your lunch to the work.
7. Rent DVDs from Netflix:
Let’s assume that your family buy four DVDs a month and that will cost $20 each, $80 a month. Instead of buying DVDs if you rent them from Netflix that will cost you only $9.95 for the whole month. You can save $70 per month.
8. Clothing:
This is a variable expense in each family's budget. You need not to replace your clothing every few months instead buy absolutely no clothing for one month. Buy clothing in the time of sale as many as you can. That will save you about $100 or more per month on an average.
There are lots of other way by which you can easily save some money and that will go up $500 to $1000.
