How to choose a tattoo
67
When choosing a tattoo, there are two things you need to think about: the tattoo design and where you want it to be placed on your body. There are millions of tattoo designs to choose from and unless you have decided on a particular type of tattoo, you will be overwhelmed by the shear number of designs that are available.
For example there are thousands of angel tattoo designs as well as millions of different types of tribal tattoos. Tattoos are meant to last forever, so you should spend some time finding a design that you will be happy to wear twenty years from now. Just because, a design is popular today doesn't mean it will be popular tomorrow. If you are thinking about tattooing a person's face on your body, think about what will happen to it 10 years from now when you've put on a few pounds.
If you want to choose a tattoo design that you will be happy with, start by doing your homework first. Choose what's important in a design that you are looking for. Are you trying to make a statement? Are you trying to preserve a memory of something or someone? Or are you simply trying to belong? Many people get a tattoo so that they can fit in only to start wanting to get rid of it later. Getting rid of a tattoo is expensive and difficult so make your choices carefully.
Some things you may want to consider when choosing a tattoo include:
- What part of the body will it fit or where's the best place to put it?
- What is the cost of having the tattoo?
- Is this a tattoo that I will be proud to wear and will I still like it say, 10 years from now?
- Where will I get it done? Some designs are so complex only certain artists can do them.
- How elaborate is the design and what design do I want?
Start by looking at tattoo magazines and online tattoo galleries to get some inspiration. There are millions of designs to choose from so you're likely to find something that will help you to start forming some kind of picture of what you would like to have. Visit some photo sharing sites like flickr.com and image search websites like Google and Yahoo and do some searches to see what people are getting and how the tattoos look on them. Depending on your age and your career aspirations you may want to choose a tattoo that is not too extreme and that is placed in an area of the body that can easily be covered when you need to.
Once you have a good idea of the type of tattoo design you want, a tattoo design gallery will help you find a specific design that you can use. Just download, print the design and take it to the artist of your choice. A tattoo is permanent so make sure you choose a design that you really like. Don't let someone choose a design for you that you are not happy with. Remember you are the one who is going to be wearing the tattoo on your body.
Many states and countries do not allow you to put tattoos in certain areas of the body for health and safety reasons. Some regulations do not allow tattooing of the neck, hands, head, genitals and feet. Some tattoo designs are more suited for specific parts of the body. If you were to put them somewhere else, they would look really awful. But with so many different designs chances are that you'll find more good designs that you can use.
