How to Do a Resume the Right Way

When asking how to do a resume, you must first grasp these two vitally important facts:

  1. You have only one opportunity to make a first impression with your resume, and
  2. Recruiters and hiring managers are inundated with piles of resumes and just glance through them at first.

5 Tips on How to Do a Resume

Tip #1

You must write your resume for the particular job that you have in mind. Don't list experience that's not relevant to the job. It distracts the hiring managers and adds to their effort to pick out your relevant experience. Know the audience of your resume, and write your resume specifically for them.

Tip #2

The summary at the top of your resume is one of the most important sections. It is what the hiring manage will look at first and from that content decide to spend more time on reading the rest of your resume. If you don't catch the attention of the hiring manager with your summary, your resume will end up buried in the "I'll perhaps look at these later" pile.

Tip #3

Your resume is not your opportunity to display your verbosity. It's your professional advertisement to the world. Ads are crisp and clear, and convey the desired message in the least number of words. If you comatose the hiring manager with a long list of your "features" then you'll be out of a job for a very long time. Dazzle them with your benefits!

How does a feature differ from a benefit?

"Ten years of widget sales experience with an average of $5 million annual sales," is a feature.

"Brings proven sales experience to ABC Company that will increase brown widget sales by at least 10% in the first year, as demonstrated by a track record of an average of $5 million in sales per year," is a benefit.

Tip #4

Spell check your resume! Let me say it again. Spell check your document. Once you've spell checked your resume, spell check it again. If you submit a resume with spelling errors, the first impression you'll create is that you're sloppy and don't pay attention to detail. Who'll want to hire someone like that? Once your resume leaves your hands, you can't "recall" it. So, spend the necessary time on one of the easiest how to do a resume tricks that's often overlooked by many people.

Tip #5

Your resume is your ticket to your future. Spend a few dollars and get professional help with how to do a resume. You'll thank yourself when you receive that bigger pay check or work at that really cool company.

Sound advice. Here's a little tip for people too: "resume" is accepted and widely used, but really it spells "resume" as in to return to a task or action previously stopped. Résumé does not carry the double meaning and it's cool looking with all the fancy French stuff going on; it's technically "more" correct than spelling it without the accents. Just hold down the Alt key while typing 0233.

Good post. Straight to the point.
