When drawing cars the thing you want to remember is to always draw perspective lines. Eventually after you become very good at it and you have drawn cars for a while using this method you will be able to draw without any perspective lines at all. But for the sake of this article I will assume that you are learning how to draw cars from scratch.

So to start with what you want to do it decide on the angle of the car you want to draw. For instance, looking straight on at the car from the ground, looking straight on from a standing height, looking at it from a corner, from the back etc. This has to be considered before starting, as this will determine the type of perspective box to draw before hand.

Now for the sake of this article I’m going to talk about how to draw a car from the angle of the back corner of the car from a standing height. So we will start with the horizon line, if you don’t know what a horizon line is, it is the line that determines where the perspective lines are drawn to. Now since we are drawing the car from the ground view, the box we are going to draw is going to be below the horizon line, because if you were looking at a car from a standing height the horizon line would be below you, and you would be able to see the cars roof. Now since we are also drawing it from an angle of the corner, there should be three sides of the box visible, as you would see the roof.

Now draw the horizon line straight across the page about a quarter of the way down the page from the top. Now draw the height of the box(remember, below the horizon line), drawing a bit bigger than what the height of the car will be, the car will be off the ground because of the wheels. Now from the top and bottom of the line you just drew, bring the lines up to the end of the horizon line of both sides. Then draw the end of the boxes where you want the car to stop, in this case the left box will be smaller than the right box because were drawing it looking at the back right corner.

Now that you have your perspective box completed, its just the case of drawing where all the wheels would be seen, then where the bonnet ends, where the roof ends etc. With practice you will eventually get used to drawing in this box and your cars will start to look more realistic and in proportion, it just takes a bit of time and practice.-

Now eventually after alot of practice you will be able to do this free hand and have it in perspective. It took me about a month of drawing 2-3 cars a week to get to the point where i could draw them without any guide lines etc.

Just remember there are loads of resources on the internet and your local library etc to aid you in learning how to draw cars. Once you learn how to draw them, the next stage is learning how to render them correctly (my favourite bit). No drawing is complete without a fully rendered finish!

It takes you threw every stage, step by step, so its great for beginners. It even shows you how to render them perfectly which is what i moslty reccommend getting this e-book for. It is not necessary mind you, there are loads of sites out there that teach you a great deal on how to draw cars, but in my opinion it is well worth the investment. Its very easy to follow and explains everything very well. I was actually quite impressed as i own a few books on how to draw cars which i got from my college library and then bought of off amazon, but this e-book explains it all much better and gives you alot more pictures to relate to.
