Essay writing 101

So you want to write an essay and you do not know where to begin. Well I have a very easy method that is good for helping to write essays quick and easy. This method should be used until you learn more about yourself and can write with your own style. The reason I say this is because as this method will provide you with quick and easy essays it will not provide the personality that free writing has due to its “bricked” style.

The biggest problem people have is getting started and maintaining focus. That is why I use a plan that keeps me on track and is easy to use and follow. I like to call it the rule of five. For every page you write make five paragraphs of five sentences each. The easiest way to break it down is to draw on one page five big rectangles dividing it. Then write your topic sentence. The next three sentences should each describe your three body paragraphs. Your last sentence will tie the three subtopics together.

Now your next three topics are the body of your writing. The sentences in your introductory paragraphs used to describe each topic can be rewritten as the first (topic) sentence for each of your body paragraphs.

Now here comes the hardest part of writing an essay, the closing. You need to leave your readers satisfied and wanting to act. The first sentence or two should be a general re-cap of what was gone over. The next two should reflect upon the ideas behind the facts. Finally the last sentence should either be a call to action or a question that revolves around your principles mentioned in the essay.
