How to find a good tattoo artist
59
By doing your research thoroughly before you get your tattoo, you'll greatly increase your chances of getting the design that you want and also get a high quality tattoo that you can be proud to wear for many years to come. Finding a tattoo artist doesn't have to be difficult as long as you know what you're doing and what you should be looking for in a tattoo artist. It is a bad idea to compare artists sorely based on price; there are other more important things that you need to consider.
Finding a good tattoo artist can make a big difference. It's what distinguishes bad tattoos from beautiful body art and also painful experiences from good ones. You need to find a tattoo artist whose work you like and admire. If you don't like their work, chances are that you will not be happy with a tattoo from them so there is no point going to their shop because you might end up getting tattooed just because you are there.
Get recommendations based on work you've seen
One of the easiest and perhaps the fastest way to find a tattoo artist is to locate them by asking from their past customers. If you see someone with a tattoo that you like, ask them who did it for them. Seeing an example of an artist's work is one of the easiest ways to tell how good a tattoo artist is. Many people are quite happy to recommend someone whose work they are very happy with. But don't settle for the first recommendation you get right away. Make a good list of shops to visit so that you can get a chance to meet the artists and talk to them. You need to find out whether they do the design that you want and also you want an artist that makes you comfortable and with whom you can easily communicate. It is very important that you are able to communicate to the tattoo artist what you want in a tattoo. Some personalities just don't go together. You may feel intimidated or uncomfortable so make it a point to find one that you like and can work with.
Don't make price based comparisons
Many people agree that price shouldn't be a major consideration when choosing or comparing tattoo artists. Reputable tattoo artists don't work cheaply. A good artist knows that they are good so they will expect you to appreciate the fact that they are worth the extra money. Those that are just starting out may offer to do it for free or cheaply so that they can get more business and advance their skills. Remember, there is a risk involved in using cheap services. I'm not saying that cheap artists produce poor quality work but the risk of getting what you don't like or a poor quality tattoo is very high. It is far much better to wait, save up and get one done properly later then to get a cheap tattoo done. I have heard a lot of horror stories from disappointed people.
After you have chosen some artists that you like it's time to visit their shops and look at their portfolio of previous work. Spend some time checking out several artists' shops, this will ensure that when you finally choose the one you like, you'll be happy with the result. Look around the shop to make sure that it's clean and if someone is being tattooed, check if the artist is following the correct hygiene procedures.
Remember also that the government requires that everyone who operates a Tattoo Shop must obtain a Tattoo Shop License. It is illegal to work or practice tattooing without obtaining a Tattoo Shop License. This is something that you should check out right away. It ensures that the basic requirements and standards are met.
Finding a tattoo artist is not difficult but you need to do your homework.
