What Is An Indie T-Shirt?

T-shirts are a staple of indie fashion, after all you can't wear nothing but flannel shirts. However, like all indie clothing you have to be very particular with your t-shirt selection. You cannot just buy a faux vintage tee and think you're good to go. Oh no, you couldn't be further off the mark. And indie shirt should either be truly unique, vintage, or just a plain solid color. No commercialized bull crap and no fake vintage. Don't worry too much about it though, I'll help you find the indie t-shirt that's right for you.

New Threadless Indie Tees

Buying Indie T-Shirts Online

The internet is probably the best thing to happen to the indie clothing industry. There are literally hundreds of indie t-shirts shops online, and I'm going to list a few of the best.

Threadless Tees

Threadless Tees is the poster child for indie t-shirt success among internet indie clothing retailers. Thousands of people submit t-shirt designs each day and the site's members vote on what they would like printed. The shirt designs are usually either ironic and humorous or rather artsy, so they are perfect t-shirts to compliment your indie wardrobe. I've bought about fifteen or so shirts from Threadless, so I'm obviously quite a fan myself. Remember, Threadless has a new shirt selection each week, so check back often!

8Ball

Looking for band shirts? Well 8Ball is where they're at. This UK t-shirt company has an entire section devoted to indie rock t-shirts, with a few classic rock ones added for good measure. They don't have everything, mind you, but if you're looking for some classic indie shirts featuring bands such as The Smiths, this is the right place.

Band Websites

If your favorite indie band hasn't had a show near you, but you would still like to wear their merch the best thing to do is to check out their band website. Bands will usually sell their merchandise online and you can have a shirt shipped to you for minimal fee.

Design By Hümans

Design By Hümans, or DBH, is basically an upscale version of Threadless. DBH shirts are typically very well designed, you might as well be wearing a work of art. With a pair of fitted jeans, none will be more indie than you with these t-shirts.

Vintage Indie T-Shirts

Another route to tread on the search for indie threads is vintage. The vintage path will take you to thriftshops and vintage shops, and it will be more difficult than shopping online. However, vintage clothing is often much cheaper - you can pick up some nice fitted old t-shirts at Goodwill for just a couple bucks each! In this economy that's nothing to scoff at, so be recession chic and pick up some vintage indie t-shirts!

Typical Places to Find Vintage Indie T-Shirts

  • Salvation Army
  • Independent Thriftshops
  • Vintage Stores
  • Flee Markets

Solid Color Indie Tees and V-Necks

Another road on your journey to indie t-shirt nirvana is the solid color highway.  Solid color tees are great and compliment any indie wardrobe.  However not just any solid color t-shirt will cut it.  You will want to get a shirt that is fitted and flatters you.  Color is important as well.  Try to get a stonewash or heather shirt, these are more neutral and less obnoxious than just a plain dye.

Where to Find Solid Color Indie T-shirts

  • Target
  • Kohls, JCPenny, Macy's, other department stores
  • American Apparel
  • Urban Outfitters

Other Ways To Find Indie T-shirts

In addition to the methods above, there are a few other ways to obtain indie tees.  Go to indie shows and purchase some merch, bum clothes off friends, or even make your own!  Indie fashion is all about being individualistic, so you could even choose to disregard this guide completely!  Just don't come cryin' to me when a herd of hipsters pokes fun at you!

Good luck on the indie t-shirt hunt!
