74If you are like me and have struggled with the idea of your teenage children venturing online, and going to places like myspace.com or facebook.com, then I have an alternative for you. Make a website for your kids to use were they and you together control the content and the people who are allowed to join. No you don't have to build it from scratch and be some amazing coder to get the job done. There are scripts already built as social networking platforms that are free and easy to install. The script I used for my kids is PHPIzabi and does most of the things that that people can do on myspace.com without the worries of your children being accessible to everyone on the Internet.
Every person who joins my kid's website has to be approved by them, so they set the rules that if they don't personally know you then you can't get in. Having teenagers in this time of technology isn't easy, so you have to make decisions that will either make them mad and pout or happy that they still get to do what they want and be safe at the same time. For pretty obvious reasons I won't give you the address to their site, but they can tell anyone they want about it and have the same kind of experience they would have at myspace.com without the worries. My kids have actually made some new friends through having their own site because I have talked to people where I work who are in the same predicament with their children and told them that their kids could join the site also. The site builds a real sense of community for the kids because they don't feel threatened when they use it. I know this isn't a solution for everyone but for someone who wants their children to have access to technology and learn a lot about running a website it is a great solution.
I am sure there are church groups and other groups that would find a real benefit in having their own social network that they can control. There are a few things that you can do in addition to only granting access to people you know, that will keep the site safe. The first thing you can do is set the .htaccess page on the site so that search engines don't index the site. You can also password protect the entire site so that only people with the password can see the site at all. These few precautions will make your kids website virtually invisible to the general public, and if they did happen to stumble upon the site they still wouldn't be able to gain access. No matter how hard you try you cannot protect your children once they leave you home, but you can give them access to the technology they want now and not fear for their safety. I actually figure that once my kids are in college the novelty of social networking will have run its course and they will know how to protect their information regardless.
Raising kids is a balancing act, and even the best jugglers drop the ball once in a while, but don't drop the ball by allowing access to your children. You now know of at least one way you can say no without really saying no. PHPIzabi can be downloaded for free and you can host the site yourself for about a hundred bucks a year, so when your children back you into the myspace.com corner, go ahead and say "I have a better idea". You now know how to make a website for kids.

For all of you children who are wanting to make a website like Club Penguin or Webkinz, I'm sorry to say but it isn't easy making a Flash based website. Club Penguin and Webkinz are make by professional companies with millions of dollars worth of servers and programs. First off, you have to learn Flash coding and PHP. That will take a while to master. Then you have to buy servers and set them up. You have to buy domain names to get to the website. You have to host the website from the server, and get people on it. It is not a very simple task, and will cost you thousands of dollars. I would recommend a text based website.

I am very happy to have raised five very good sons with out too much worry and no troubles.
I cannot but help feel, that we had it easier in our day than you have today. There was not as much distraction and certainly no internet.
