The first jewellery

Any natural object with an unusual colour or shape, or with a hole in it, is a good start to make them as a jewellery. The object, perhaps a shell, will be attached to a thin strips of animal hide or a string and wear as a decoration.

In some cultures jewellery is worn to bring a good luck or to scare away evil spirits. Blue and white eye beads made fron glass are supposed to protect against the evil eye. Jewellery makers are always looking out for rare or unusual items to include in their work. Try your local charity shop, car, boot sale or gift fair, you never know what you might find. You only need a few good tools and a litle equipment to make most of the jewellery.

Start to make your own jewellery.

Everyday objects like seeds and grasses, feathers, shells, beads, small marbles can be the first sources of your own simple jewellery. Most of these are still used till today. The most unique and goo example from own jewelery is the necklace from Papua New Guinea was made from threaded shark's teeth.

  • Use anything you like to make your jewellery. A beautiful coloured feathers, animal teeth, patterened shells, spices seeds, medium sized flower seeds or buy some colourful beads from your nearest store.

  • Firstly, lay out your main items, example are shells in the tray so that they look attractive. To complete the pattern beautifully, drop a few small shiny look beads into each bowl of the tray. Pierce the shells by drilling the edge with a drill bit. Drill carefully as small shells may break. Make silver rings by winding wire around a metal rod several times. Snip each ring with wire cutters. Thread a bead onto each ring, slip it through a hole and close.

  • Cut a length of silk or string longer than you need. Thread through several beads and shells from your own laid design. Turn around hook loop several times and tie in a knot. Thread back through same beads to begin necklace. Continue to thread shells, beads and glass onto silk or string. Finish by looping around the ring several times and knotting silk. Thread end back through several beads and cut off. Put own you neck and look yourself at the mirror at the beauty of your own creation.
