WHO disabled the task manager?

Is your computer showing error messages when trying to run the task manager? Then you need to look for virus that has done it.

Why can't your anti-virus fix this?

This is because your anti-virus can remove the virus (if updated regularly). But it cannot restore the changes made by the virus.

So here is my Tip to fix the hole and a few softwares which may help you later on ( some small sized freewares).

Yes, its so simple by using the following tools without messing with the registry.

TOOLS YOU NEED....

These are the following tools (softwares) you require to do the operation.

  1. ProcessExplorer

  2. RRT(Remove Restriction Tool)

  3. HijackThis

These are all freeware download links from softpedia.com. These are also small sized softwares processexplorer (1.56MB) and RRT(48KB).

ProcessExplorer is a tool that is similar to windows task manager. Process Explorer will show you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

RRT (Remove Ristrictions Tool) - A tool to re-enable Ctrl+Alt+Del, Folder Options and Registry tools

HijackThis is a general homepage hijacker detector and remover that targets the methods used by the most common hijackers

4 EASY STEPS TO REMOVE RESTRICTIONS

If these doesn't work with in nornal startup , do this in safe mode

1.Disabling the Virus programs that are running

Run processxp.exe, kill all processes that have the icon of a folder. (REMEMBER there is no application that has an icon that of a folder) kill the processes which comes below the explorer.exe and has names similar to system services.after this DONOT double click any of the hard disk drives or usb drives, if you want to open a file use the explore button from the toolbar and browse the contents.

2.Removing the restrictions made by Virus

Virus makes some restrictions in the computer so that it cannot be identified easily, some common restrictions are disabling the taskmanager, disabling the show hidden files option in folder options, virus may be using the xp's autorun feature to run itself when we double click a hard disk drive and these autorun.inf and autorun.exe files are hidden.

For removing these restrictions run RRT.EXE and tick all the restrictions and select REMOVE button. This will remove the restrictions .(DoNOT restart now).

3.Restoring the registry changes made by virus

Run hijackthis.exe and do a system scan. tick all the boxes and click fix all button.(if you know which all programs you need you can avoid those programs from the list).

4. NOW WHAT ?

Thats IT. You are done. Your task manager will be working fine for you now.

Thanks - this was VERY helpful!!

Note to users: On step 3, be "selective" of what you check off, or your system will NOT be the same again!

On my system, a virus/trojan was hiding inside\Program Files\Microsoft Security Adviser\(Notice the misspelling of "Advisor".); watch for these files:

msavscmsctrlmsiemonmssadvmsscan
