If you have naturally curly hair it can be an undertaking to take care of it. Curly hair can be extremely difficult to take care of especially if you do not know all the important steps to take to make your curls bounce and to end the frizzies.

I know this from experience because I was born with naturally curly hair. When I was very little my dad heavy-handedly comb my hair every morning. It was a memory I sometimes wish I could forget. He would slather on Vaseline to my semi wet hair and work that comb through the knots. It was painful and many teeth were lost in my hair when the combs would break. Finally my mother (who was not even doing my hair) decided it was time to chop it all off. I cannot say I blame her because curly hair is not easy to take care of especially if you do not know what you are doing. Of course this was over 30 years ago and things have changed greatly. Curly hair is not such a mystery anymore. It may have taken me a few years to figure out but I finally rebelled against my mother cutting my hair and grew it out starting in high school. By the time I graduated from college my hair was down to the middle of my back (remember curly hair grows slower because of the shape it forms and is not growing straight. During those years I was able to experiment with my hair and find the perfect solution. During this time I learned to truly love my hair and what it had to offer me.

I WANT YOU TO BE ABLE TO EMBRACE YOUR CURLS TOO!!!

When I tell others how I take care of my hair they are shocked and amazed. This is because I never brush my hair and I hardly ever shampoo my hair. This helps to keep it from getting frizzy. My hair is incredibly curly mostly in little ringlets and my hair comes to the center of my back when its wet (maybe a bit longer) once it dries and curls my hair shrinks up quite a bit and takes on that ringlet look. What I have found for myself is that there are 10 very important points and steps to follow to allow your true curl to come out.

These are 10 points that are truly important to remember when you have curly hair because they help you to work with the curl and not against it.

•1. Do not use a brush

When you have curly hair you do not want to brush it this just causes the "frizzies" and helps to make your hair unmanageable. Using a brush defeats the purpose and goes against your curl.

•2. Always finger comb your hair

Finger combing your hair is the best method in keeping your curls in tact and keeping your curls tame. Finger combing does not cause the "frizzies".

•3. Do not use a blow dryer

Again too much heat is not good for your curly hair. Let it naturally dry and soak in the conditioner. Blow dryers are also frizz makers so cutting down or getting rid of the blow dryer will help bring back that natural curl.

•4. Do not wash your hair more than once a week

There is no need to wash curly hair more than once a week. Doing so can be another frizz creator. If your hair needs a pick me up before your next shampooing do a quick fix. This can be getting your hair wet and finger combing through a bit of conditioner.

•5. Always use conditioner

Conditioner is your best friend; use it every time you wash your hair. Finger combing your hair with conditioner will make it easier to maneuver through your curly locks. Not only do I use a combination shampoo/conditioner to wash with I also conditioner my hair twice. The second time I leave the conditioner in my hair.

•6. Find a stylist that understands curly hair

I cannot stress this enough there are so many stylists that have NO IDEA what they are doing when they are met with curly hair. I have had to find that out the hard way and believe me it is not fun because then you have to go through the process of fixing their mistakes. What a waste of money. There are many sources such as the naturally curly website where you can search for stylists in your area.

•7. Try different products until you find the right combination for your hair

Sometimes it takes awhile to find the right combination of products that works for your hair. I find that for me and my daughters although our hair is similar there are differences and our hair responds to different products. So take suggestions and switch around until you find that perfect combination. In addition sometimes that perfect combination does not work after awhile and you will have to switch it up a bit.

•8. Ask other curly haired people what they do and use

The best way to understand your hair is to ask someone else with curly hair. Usually they have been through the same process already and might have some helpful hints. This can be on stylists that they like or products that they have tried and liked. You should make sure you understand why they did or did not like that product because you might be able to use the products that did not work for them. For example my cousin and I have similar hair mine is just a little thicker than hers so one product that did not help her worked great for me and vice versa.

•9. Do not use too many products

Although products are very important for curly hair it is also extremely important that you do not over do it with the products. Too much products will also help to hinder the natural curl and can also cause the "frizzies" by drying out your hair which you want to avoid.

•10. Enjoy your hair

This is probably the most important point. When you do not understand curly hair it can be frustrating to take care of. Love your hair so many people would die to have the curly hair that you do so learn how to take care of it and learn to love it for what it is; beautiful bouncing curls.

Now that I have two girls of my own with long naturally curly hair it is amazing to me that even though their hair looks exactly like mine each is slightly different in several ways. One daughter's hair is a bit thinner than mine; one daughter's hair is easier to manage. Still I rely on the do's and don'ts above, only washing their hair once a week and making sure to conditioner their hair often. For myself and my daughters I use a combination shampoo/conditioner and then conditioner our hair afterwards and as soon as we get out of the shower I use leave in condition and I only finger comb our hair. This works on all of our hair even if the conditioners that we use are different.

It took me many years to figure out these 10 steps and they are all individually important and together give you all the tools you need to make your hair fabulous. So go on learn the 10 steps and then go out and flaunt those curls.

EMBRACE THOSE CURLS!!

Embrace Your Curls!!!

Great hub! Good tips. Hand combing is so much more effective than anything else.

Thank you Aya, I agree completely and I remember the torture of having my hair combed and brushed. Once I started using my fingers it was so much easier and more effective.

this is GREAT advice. i have never heard the whole, finger comb your hair thing. i'll try that out. I have the problem of having ridiculously thick hair so sometimes my hair looks even more ridiculous of I don't comb it. I usually end up straightening it just to make it easier. But I also never heard the no blow dryer thing either. I'm going to try this out!

Dana, give it a try. Try finger combing with lots of conditioner and see how it is after it dries naturally. I am certain you will like the outcome. I have incredibly thick hair as well. If I comb it, which is rarely I use a very very wide toothed comb, but rather use my fingers.

My oldest daughter and I have naturally curly hair, as well. It has always been the bane of our existence. For the past couple of years, I have reduced my shampooing and use conditioner only for the times in between. It really makes a difference.

Finding a hairdresser that knows how to cut curly hair properly can be quite a challenge. That's why, when I find a good one, I stick with them, even if it means that I have a 3 hour drive to get there. Re the blow drying, I can't remember what year it was the last time I used a blow dryer.

Have you ever had your hair streaked? The streaks don't show the same in curly hair as they do in straight hair because the light reflects and refracts differently. I still like it, but it doesn't look like the pic of the model.

I have only very recently come to appreciate my hair. My hairdresser doesn't though. He insists on straightening it every time I go. Oh well, it makes a nice change and I don't get it done very often.

Great, helpful hub, TM!

Shirley, Thanks for your comments. It is always interesting to hear what others feel about their hair and how they take care of it.

I can understand your pain. My mom used to get so flustered when it came to my hair. Finally she just cut it. She swears that I wear it long now to get back at her (as a joke of course) lol. I understand her pain now because it can be difficult to take care of. I also had a hair dresser when I was younger that only wanted to cut it really short or straighten it. I agree completely once you find someone who can work with curly hair you have to stick with them no matter the distance or the price because they are incredibly hard to come by. I have to be honest I barely shampoo maybe once a week at most but usually every other week. And when I do shampoo I use a combination shampoo and conditioner.

I have not tried streaks yet but would like to some time. Right now I am considering having my hair braided to see how that looks since my hair is long.

Actually, TM, I braid mine when I just can't stand it anymore. It keeps it out of my face, and is good in hot weather. Then, when I take the braid out, my hair is smooth(er) at the top and is kinky rather then curly the rest of the way. That only works though if I braid it when it is wet.

Shirley - This might be a silly question but do you pull it back in a ponytail and then braid the pony tail or do you braid from the hairline back? I ask because the top of my hair is smoother and I think its because I pull my hair back in a bun or ponytail to keep it out of my face.

Shirley Anderson profile image

I do that as well sometimes, TM.  It's easier and quicker than braiding.

I do it both ways, depending on how it's cut - if it's a tiny bit too short and falls out without being pony tailed, then I put the pony tail in and then braid the tail.  Otherwise, I either do one long braid from either the nape or higher up, depending on what I feel like.  Sometimes, I just pull all the hair back, and up from the sides and braid that, letting the rest fall loose.  Once in a while, I'll braid the loose part separately, incorporating the tail end of the top braid into the start of the longer braid.  Very rarely, I French braid it.  French braiding is my favourite, looks wise, but is such an arduous task.  By the time I'm done, my arms are ready to fall off.

Thanks SA - Great information. I cannot french braid but love the look as well when someone can do it for me. Heck braiding my hair in the pony tail tires my arms out lol. It is always good to hear what others do it helps to give me ideas for my own hair as well as my girls' hair too. Thanks!!

Welcome! When I French Braid my own hair, I have to have a 3 way mirror, and always end up starting over at least once.

Just doing one at the back is the easiest. My hair is....well, I say thick, but the hairdresser says it isn't, that I just have a lot of it. In either case, I can braid it and it stays in, even without an elastic on the end.

Good luck with it. You may even discover something funky and new by playing around with it.

By the way, are the triplets all girls? Are they identical?

Triplet Mom profile image

Triplet Mom  says:

SA - I have been practicing with trying to french braid so hopefully I will get it soon. My hair is pretty thick and I also have lots of it. It is similar in look to the girl in the first picture I have on here. But much thicker. When I pull it back I have to actually make three braids of the braid would be way too thick.

As for my babies I have one boy and two girls and the girls are not identical. Each of my kids has their own individual look and personality! Thanks for asking.

Cool tips, some of them I already use ie, never, ever brush or comb my hair, never use hair dryers etc, I spray mist it with water on mornings I don't wash it, in fact only wash my hair twice a week to prevent the dreaded frizz and I change my products once my hair starts rebelling lol. There's not enough on the market for people with curly hair, everyone seems to want it straight, not me I stopped fighting with my unruly curls over 10 years ago and let it do what it wants to do, it's now easier to deal with, don't fight the curl, accept it, those who get perms have to pay to have the curls we have naturally!!

Diane - "Don't fight the curl, accept it" Great words of wisdom that every curly head person should abide by. Yes curly hair can be bothersome at times but when you learn how to deal with your hair and let go then it can be wonderful. Thanks for the comments.

Joan, I actually rotate out products about every other month. I usually use a shampoo/conditioner combination and then a conditioner for curly hair or a moisturizing conditioner.

This is so cool, I'll try to follow all your tips and stuff. Usually when i go out, I put gel in my hair to keep it from frizzing out and going puffy. If I let my hair dry out by itself it becomes really puffy too and frizzy. I hope that this tips help. Thank you so much for posting them.

thank you for the reminder. Having curly hair can be a pain and I really hate the effort and time it takes to straighten it. I like to use Paul Mitchell's "The Condtioner". It is a great leave in conditioner for all types of curly hair.

Thank you so much for this lovely hub. I have a naturally curly hair and when I use the right product, it looks really good and I get a lot of compliments. One thing is for sure, we need to understand it and most importantly love the curly nature of our hair. I use to think, I was a victim of curly hair but not any more. I would rather work with it than against it. To add to that both of my girls have curly hair too. Thanks for the great info.
