ARE YOU LYING?......OR NOT?

telling that someone is lying is not an exact science, especially if someone has read about how to tell if someone is lying so they will know the tells.

here are some basic guidelines:

1. the person will avoid most facial expressions when lying. they will have a "poker face" and will try to look at ease but their body language will be anything but. their arms and legs will be inward and their body will take up less space.

2. the person may touch somewhere on his face like his/her nose or mouth, also his/her ears. they won't touch their chest around their heart with an open hand.

3. they won't make eye contact and will likely look sideways.

4. expressions are limited to mouth movements instead of the whole face.

5. unconsciously the liar will move something between you and him/her

6. the person will repeat your words back to you. for instance you ask "did you move the lamp?" instead of just "no", they would say "no, i did not move the lamp". in the same vein, they will not say a contraction, instead of saying "no, i didn't move the lamp" they would say "no, i did not move the lamp".

7. sometimes a person will use humor or sarcasm to avoid a subject.

one other thing you can try is to change the subject quickly. if the person is not telling the truth you can almost visibly see them relax...an innocent person will seem confused by the sudden change in topics and want to say on the same subject.

of course this doesn't prove a person is a liar, this will just help you compare these things to their normal behavior.
