The type of insomnia you are suffering from should give you an idea of what you should try. If you are suffering from transient insomnia then try the simpler insomnia treatments first. The same applies for acute insomnia. If however you are suffering from acute insomnia and the medical world hasn't treated you sleep disorder than you should try many alternative treatments. Finding out what causes your insomnia should be you first priority. Keeping a diary would be greatly helpful as you can rule out what or what may not be the cause of culprit. The very first thing you should scrutinize is you bedroom. Make sure nothing in it is troubling you. If there is too much lights coming in then do something about and even consider blackout curtains. Your diet should be the second aspect of your life that scrutinize. Avoid all kinds of foods that are processed and definitely avoid caffeine. Keep what you eat and drink as natural as possible just to make sure there is not something, like a chemical ingredient that is keeping you awake at night. The same applies to medications, refrain from taking medicine even for a limited time just be make sure they aren't the reason for insomnia. Treating insomnia will require a lot of effort and you must follow this through completely even if it becomes to boring or tedious.

You also have to closely examine you lifestyle and especially your social lifestyle. Your daily routine is also extremely important and open for further scrutinizing. Avoid any kind of mental stimulation before going to bed by not an hour or two but by several hours. TV over stimulates the brain because it makes us think of events and news that are occurring. An insomniacs brain could due without this form of stimulation. Watching sports before bed is especially bad, especially if your favorite team lost. You should also incorporate physical exercise to your life. A body that has had a full day will more likely fall asleep faster than a body that was stagnate most of the day. How to treat insomnia also relies on alternative therapy and the most obvious controlling your stress and learning to relax. This can be achieved in several ways from breathing exercises to gentle massages from time to time. Meditation is also beneficial for the mind and body. Cognitive Behavioral Treatment might also work well for you. Especially if you are the type of person who is anxious around bedtime. There are many people who can go to sleep because they worry many things related to their sleep. Such as will they wake up on time, or if they'll get enough sleep and so on. So CBT for such people is necessary as it will help you deal with your bedtime anxiety. Treatments for insomnia also include acupuncture, and many have even traveled to China to seek treatment there. The results vary and more research in this form of insomnia treatment should be taken before opting for this kind of treatment. Bright light therapy has been making a lot of headway in the past decade or so. Artificial light in the morning helps regulate a body's rhythm. This is for people who suffer from 'night owl syndrome', also know as circadian rhythm sleep disorders. Herbal supplements, Aromatherapy and Melatonin are other treatments for insomnia worth exploring. Treating insomnia is not just about taking sleeping aides. It is about finding out ways to help relax our minds in order to sleep or to remain asleep. There is a lot of good information here on an important subject. I have problems sleeping also (sleep apnea)
