1. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are going to provide your body with vitamins and minerals, which it cannot manufacture on its own, and you'll also find that through eating these foods, you are going to be able to drop your cholesterol level, which will help you avoid heart disease in the long run. Similarly, some foods that are rich in antioxidants and other helpful substances can help you keep your heart healthy as well.
2. Make sure that you plan your diet. Eating well doesn't happen overnight, and you'll find that if you simply charge into it without a plan that you are going to run into problems. It's easy to say that you want to eat in a more healthy fashion, but unless you sit down and plan menus, chances are good that the end of the day will roll around and it will just be easier to order out or to cook something that you know about. Try keeping foods like carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli washed and ready for preparation in your refrigerator, and always make sure that you have good recipes on hand.
3. Be able to identify the unhealthy fats. Saturated fats are going to be significantly unhealthier for you than unsaturated fats; ideally they are less than seven percent of your total daily calories. They can clog up your arteries, making your heart work harder and putting you at risk for heart disease. When you want to eliminate the unhealthier kinds of fat that you consume, make sure that you cut back on the butter, margarine and shortening that you use in your food. Consider healthier alternatives, like olive oil and canola oil to help you avoid heart disease.
4. Get more lean protein in your diet. There are meats out there that are low in fat and much healthier for you. For instance, try cutting out red meat or at least reducing it. Look for fish and cuts of white meat on poultry. Some fish, like tuna and salmon, are especially healthy for you thanks to the fact that they are high in omega 3 fatty acids, which your body needs for good functioning. Remember that your meals do not have to be tasteless, just better planned.
5. Consider portion control. The truth is that foods that have fat in them taste good. It is hard to cut them out entirely and unless there is a medical problem that specifically prevents you from doing so, you can continue eating them. The trick is to make sure that you do not eat them to excess, however! Take some time and really consider what you can do eat in moderation; learn about acceptable portion sizes in order to avoid heart disease.
6. Don’t give up. No matter how good your intentions, chances are good that you may lapse. Just get back on and do better; it is completely possible to avoid heart disease.
