How to put on weight
78In America, where many people are struggling with weight loss, the answer to how to put on weight may seem simple. However, just as there is a temptation to choose the easiest way to lose weight, there is the same temptation to choose the easiest way to gain weight. The easy way is always unhealthy and it won't produce the desired results. Gaining weight in a healthy, effective manner in order to improve physical health and appearance can be just as challenging as losing weight with this same goal.
There are many factors that can contributed to an individual being underweight. In some cases it began before birth where the child didn't receive enough nutrition from the mother, resulting in a lower number of fat cells. Other possibilities are stress, anxiety, worrying, emotional pain, overuse of caffeine and nicotine(in combination they create a lot of nervous energy and too much mental activity), hyperthyroidism, psychological problems(the most common in this catagory are Bulimia and Anorexia), small appetite, and illness.
If the problem of being underweight is a recent condition it is best to get a medical evaluation to isolate the problem. In most cases, if an individual has been thin their whole life, and comes from a family that is thin, no medical problems will be found. The cause in this case is usually a fast metabolism and a limited ability to store fat.
Non-nutritional Sources affecting Ability to Gain Weight
It may be necessary to work with a stress counselor or a psychologist if the inabiltiy to gain weight is due to emotional or psychological factors. If you have a tendancy to be nervous or high strung, practicing stress reduction through music, meditation, low intensity exercise and relaxation can be helpful. Slowing down the mind and body will help the body to more easily absorb nutrients needed for healthy weight gain. Cutting out nicotine and caffeine can help add pounds by allowing the metabolism to operate within normal, healthy levels. Getting a full night sleep is necessary to allow the body to ease nervous tensions that can eat up calories.
An exercise routine that focuses on increasing muscle mass is important for desirable weight gain. Weight training is the best way to do this. Higher reps with at least 3 sets per exercise will maximize muscle gains. (Creatine is a healthy supplement that many athletes use to help maximize weight gain). It is best to avoid high intensity aerobic exercises as they will cause the body to eventually draw energy from muscle mass, resulting in muscle reduction.
Healthy Weight Gain through Good Nutrition
It is important to be patient when adjusting the diet in order to add pounds. A good goal is to add a pound a week. This will require eating an extra 500 calories a day above what the body requires. The best way to do this is to increase portions and number of meals per day. Healthy, high calorie foods that are easily digested are the way to go. Yogurt with high probiotic content, whole grain bread, potatoes, oats, whole grain pastas, brown rice, cheese(goat's cheese if you can afford it), avocados and nuts are a great way to get healthy weight gain. The healthy fats in these foods are higher in calories than foods high in carbohydrates or sugars.
If you are in good physical health more fats can be added from seeds, butter, dairy, milk products, and meat. It is important to avoid fried foods, trans fats and hydrogenated oils. You can get great tasting, cold pressed margarines and oils at quality heath markets in most areas. Concentrate on eating starchy vegetables such as beets, carrots, potatoes and squash. Remember to eat meals balanced with carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats such as olive oil. Eat raw fruits and vegetables because they are much more nutritious than those that are cooked or processed.
Avoid desserts and candies because they will increase energy, causing calories to be burned. Drinking beverages with your meal is not recommended because they tend to make you feel more full, causing you to eat less. Drink mixed fruit juices a half hour before or after meals for maximum calorie intake.
Benefits of Reaching your Ideal Weight through a Healthy Diet
Improved immune system
Greater resistence to infection
Quicker recovery time from illnesses
Better looking hair and skin
Improved bone health
Underweight individuals are susceptable to sickness and disease like overweight individuals because of inadequate nutrition. Eating junk food and a high sugar diet to gain weight will not only add excess fat instead of muscle, but it can lead to many ailments and diseases.
Conclusion
The easy way to try and gain weight is to eat as much of anything you desire, whenever you want. Unfortunately, this approach will not lead to healthy weight gain, increased muscle mass or an attractive body. The ideal method for effective weight gain requires patience and perseverence in eating a proper diet, exercise and for some the elimination of all emotional and psychological factors.

Thanks for your comment Tyhill27. I am glad that you found some of this information helpful. Let me know when you reach your goal.
You know, much focus is on losing weight and we all need to know that. My father and mother both were thinner people, my dad more so. He was always having to make sure he consumed enough calories for his heart health after his open heart surgery.
On the other hand, I'll eat almost anything and have really kicked up some research as well as that of my brother, to learn what was healthy and what was not...I was pleased to find a virtual rainbow of healthy choices for us that don't involve so much "quantity" counting. It's hard to eat too many veggies and berries!
I appreciate your hubs so much as they follow research I have done as well, I trust your information and value your tips. Thanks for the hard work and writing facts about nutrition that are easy to understand. I love things in a nutshell!
Way to go, Steve! =) I'm a fan, and thumbs up!
Thanks marisue! I always enjoy your thoughtful comments.
This was very informative. I eat like a horse (pretty much anything I want, though I stick mostly to real food). I've always been very thin, although now, after working-out for over twenty years, I weigh more than I ever have: almost 140. As you can imagine, I don't get much sympathy in today's bloated society (given the choice, I'd rather be me than them), but I could easily carry another ten pounds of good weight.
I'm going to give creatine a try, thanks!, and also bee pollen - which is supposed to promote healthy weight, too.
Thanks for your comment Constant Walker. Let me know how the Creatine works for you.
And the Bee Pollen!
I have just watched a Jamie Oliver show on tv in perth. And he has exposed so many details as to the way foods effect our bodies. He showed that some obese people could be fitter than very slim ones.
It is too complicated to explain here. What he was showing was that we have to be careful what we eat and some foods add fat to our body, whereas other foods do not. I would suggest everyone should try to watch this. One guy was 25 stone and when he died they did an autopsey, and his whole body was just so fatty that his liver and heart were pushed up higher in his chest than should be which caused his death. Worth while watching to understand it fully. Scarey too.
Sorry great hub though.
Thanks for your comment Eileen! That's scary having a huge fat build up and not even knowing about it. Thanks for sharing!
This is great. Excessive Fat is something to take care of.
I completely agree with you that the majority of people suffer from extra weight, but there are also those who want to put some extra kilogrammes. I'm among those whose weight is too small. Thanks you for this hub! It has really helped me in some points.
I am so glad you wrote this.I have been wondering how to gain healthy weight. After I had my 2 kids.I exercised so that I can loose my stomach.Than when I did loose my stomach,I lost my thighs and my butt, and I wanted to keep that.I turned into a skinny binny, and felt unattractive.
I am myself quite thin and I would like to put on weight. I am just 60 kg.I will certainly follow your advice to increase my wieght.
Thank You Steve I am thin I love it. I have no health issues. Thank You God. My doc is amazed how the levels are perfect. I am eternally grateful. I happened to see this article, it was no mistake. I am going to try the foods your article suggests. I could use 10 pounds. I know when I use the weights it does add allot of muscle mass. Thanks I was looking for your

I am in my 30s and I struggled with my weight form age 20 to 29. I finally lost weight when I started Nutrisystem. I worked and the food was okay. I don't eat meat- I am vegetarian.

Thank your very much for this hub it was very helpful! I don't have a problem with nicotine at all and coffee not so much, but stress and not getting enough sleep has been a factor for sure. Since I am a single bachelor I have also noticed that my tendency to skip meals was frequent. The past wile I have been putting a lot more focus on weight gain and the selection in foods and weight training was good advice. I also agree with the benefits of creatine and higher reps with at least three sets. Thanks very much for perhaps the best answer possible to my question; I hope others find it useful too!
