Introduction

For several weeks now, unemployed Americans have been anxiously and frustratingly awaiting a decision on H.R. 3548, the Unemployment Compensation Act of 2009, by the Senate. Even though many of the Democratic Senators have urged some of the resistant Republican Senators to pass the bill, they heartlessly continue stalling by bringing up issues unrelated to unemployment. In the meanwhile, 7,000 unemployed exhaust their benefits everyday, fearing how they will continue to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.

Progress on H.R. 3548 - The Unemployment Compensation Act of 2009

Although the wait is probably far from over, I found one indication of progress. On the Senate calendar for October 26, while there will be no roll call votes on Monday's session, it did state the Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, hopes to complete action on H.R. 3548 next week. Since this was listed on October 26, I assume they mean the week beginning November 1. Furthermore, for October 27 at 2:30 p.m., it said, "cloture vote on the motion to proceed to H.R. 3548, Unemployment Insurance." To see the Senate calendar, go to http://democrats.senate.gov/calendar/2009-10.html.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the term cloture, a cloture vote is when the Senate places a time limit on the consideration of a bill to end a filibuster. If the Senate has a 3/5 vote of the full Senate or normally 60 votes, it can limit consideration on a pending matter to 30 additional hours.

In the meanwhile, continue to email the Republican Senators and voice your complaints. Hang in there, America!

I'm so glad that you posted the names of the senators, and the calendar is very useful as well. Thanks so much, I am still unemployed, but I've found ways to earn a living on line for little or no money. But come voting day, I'm going to take this list with me to the polls, and a NAY it will be for these heartless senators. I will pass on this information to others so they can make their choice a well. To the rest of you who are also in the same boat as me, hang in there, keep praying, and look at other options, one being to take advantage of the stimulus money for education, go back to school. Most importantly, remember there is NOTHING to hard for God. Jesus is way, the truth and the life, and He will never forsake you. He's kept me living indoors, and eating well each day, all my needs have been met. He's provided for me thru it all, and he'll do the same for you. Tried everything else? Try Jesus. God Bless you all, I'm praying for all of us that are unemployed.

Now that my tears of frustration have subsided- for the moment- the anger I feel towards these stubborn, greedy, selfish, nay-voting Senators has risen again. By denying an extension of benefits to millions of unemployed people, like me, these ruthless men and women are showing themselves to be unfit for leadership of "the People".

Lucky for them most Americans who are suffering miserably now, due to this historically massive unemployment rate, are peace-loving folks. It's the fringe element- those enraged, out of work men who are armed to the teeth- that the misguided elitists in the Senate need to fear now.

Unemployed Americans need this extension in order to merely survive the upcoming winter. There can be no economic or jobless recovery if the fat politicians in Washington deliberately attempt to starve and freeze millions of unemployed people to death. That would be the dumbest move imaginable.

Many of us, suddenly cut-off from earning an income, are now praying to God and begging for mercy harder than we ever knew we could. God help us. Obviously, the stalling, backwards Senators are not going to figure out how stupid and destructive their anti-social behavior has been until it has destroyed the lives of millions more innocent workers. We are mostly smart, strong, good people who have been pushed out of the workforce due to no faults of our own.

It is said that "the Devil is in the details." No, in my educated opinion, the Devil is in the Senate. Quote me.

Press them all to DO THE RIGHT THING!

Hi MariMac

I really liked your comment - it was very well-worded. I wish I could do more for all of you, but all we can do is continue to plague the Senators with our comments and pray.

For all commenters - when the unemployment bill is passed, and the finances ease up, please don't forget to vote against these Senators when election time comes!

I have been out of work for almost two months. Last September, my company decided to lay off 300 workers after they have laid so many already. And this got me. Since then, I have been looking for a new job in state government and I have already had three interviews from the state. With the interviews I have had, I filled out a great deal of paper work to make the hiring process easier. I hope I get one of these jobs. I have recently refiled my claim for unemployment and I am doing fine right now. My company is making public announcements everywhere about how they will call back 150 people out of the 300 it laid off. They could call me back before I will ever get the experience of working in the Human Services Dept. or the Workforce Services. Drat! But if it does call me back, I will go back. I do not want my unemployment to completely run out.

As the rest of you are i to am praying everyday that this passes soon i am a 23 year old mother of a 2 month old and my boyfriends unemployment is the only income that we have. His last 3 checks have been delayed by "computer updating" and i had to go to my dad to pay the rent so we don't lose our home. I really hope that these people open there eyes and see that they are hurting all of us by delaying this further i have no idea what we will do if its not passed. He has been looking everyday for work and even tho he is a very talented welder he can't find work anywhere. I've been looking as well and i only have a High school diplomia so its even harder for me to find work. I'm praying that this situation our country is in gets better soon because i hate not being able to provide for my daughter. May God bless us all. -A very sad and concerned mother.

Why is it that the working poor were taxed for years to fund Welfare such as Section 8, Medi-Cal,WIC, foodstamps and who knows what else for illegals. Yet when the working poor needs medical or unemployment help, the people on Welfare and illegals can't help us and are useless.

The Government is quicker to help those on Welfare in the past and give a hand out bailout to big business from the working people's tax payments all these years.

I've been out of work for a little over a year and a half. I've applied to so many jobs and it's been months of no calls for an interview. It's never been this bad for me. I hope this passed soon. My benefits will run out next week and on top of that, public transportation is on strike. How convenient, right? Anybody calls, I won't be able to go to an interview. I'm hoping something comes along soon, because I'm going crazy being at home all the time, just sitting at my PC looking for work and not getting any calls back.
