Humane Society of the United States
59The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is one of the leading protectors against animal abuse; protecting animals from horses to whales to dogs.
In 2005 after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, the majority of the country was concerned about the people displaced from their homes or who lost their families. There was another group, HSUS, that worked to help the silent victims, the ones with no voices to help them find their families. Volunteers from all over the country went to New Orleans to help rescue abandoned animals who had lost their families. Nationwide, people adopted these animals from humane societies to give them a new home, a new family, and a fresh start. These animals were traumatized but with the help of HSUS they were able to start a new life.
In 2005 the HSUS also pushed congress to pass an amendment to the House Agriculture Appropriations bill that banned horse slaughter and later, the Senate passed a bill with the same clause. Thousands of horses were saved during the affectivity of this bill and the HSUS is now working hard to ban horse slaughter for good. Several states have already banned it.
In 2007 the HSUS fought to ban interstate cockfighting and dogfighting and completely banned cockfighting in the last two states that permitted it, Louisiana and New Mexico. This saved countless lives but more importantly, it saved these animals from suffering gross abuse that comes with the cruel "games" of cockfighting and dogfighting.
Also in 2007 the HSUS responded to another natural disaster, the wildfires in Southern California saving many lives of dogs, cats, horses, cows, goats, and others. These lives would have been overlooked if not for the help the HSUS gave.
Whenever there is an animal rights injustice, the Humane Society of the United States works peacefully with the government to right the wrong. The HSUS saves lives and makes lives better, enriching our lives with those of the animals that are saved.

An animal lover! This is a great hub. I love all living things, and have had pets, all rescues, my entire life. What a wonderful feeling knowing you are giving a quality life to a silent friend. Sadly, with perhaps parrots and/or turtles, who live probably longer than humans, our feathered/furry/swimming friends have, in comparison, a short life span, so it's always sad when their time comes to pass on. It's just how it is. Because I am such an animal lover, it bothers me that some folks simply refuse to have a pet for that reason, because it is painful to lose them. I can certainly agree with that, but it doesn't stop me from owning a pet. My thinking is, they are basically here on borrowed time, even as we are, in a sense, but I believe they deserve love and affection and a good quality life experience while they're on this earth. I also believe our pets know when they are loved, and even when they reach the end, they go knowing that they were loved a great deal.
Thanks so much for sharing!
