CITY OF PALACES

The Mysore Palace which was commissioned in 1897, is one of the important tourist locations in India and was once known as the seat of power ruled by several Kings of the same family for centuries. Situated 140 kms from Bangalore, India, Mysore is known as peaceful city, city of Royal Buildings, well planned with broad roads, lovely gardens, museums, place for promoting art, literature and music. It was the official residence of the former royal family of Mysore, popularly known as Wodeyar Family and also housed the durbar where the King used to conduct his high level meetings and issued orders. The Wodeyar family ruled Mysore from 1399 till the time of dissolution of monarchy in 1947. Needless to say, even today people of Mysore have great respect to Wodeyar Family. The prince Srikantadatta Wodeyar stays at palace, now engaged himself in business and social activities. The collections of Wodeyar is displayed in the palace for tourists and public to see.

The Dasara Festival – a festival of colour and pagentry is the festival of the land for entire Karnataka State, India and celebrations are being conducted from times immemorial. Schools and colleges are given a week long festival holidays. The special attraction earlier days when King was ruling was JAMBOOSAVARI (Elephant Ride) with marchpast of all and sundry in the palace through the important streets of Mysore city. Today in the absence of King riding the elephant on Howdah, the Goddess Chamundeshwari’s idol is taken in procession on a elephant with tabloids of Karnataka State’s developmental activities. Mysore is a popular tourist destination for tourists all over the world who plan to visit India.

Other places of interest at Mysore: Jaganmohan Palace, CFTRI (UN University), Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, Chamundi Hill along with Chamundeshwari Temple, world famous Mysore Zoo, recently a water sport activity centre is also opened there.
