Las tejeras the second transit and first in peninsular. Las Tejeras was a second transit of immigrants from every part including the islands. The only place and destination in Peninsular I know people made their second home.
People came to peninsular without any relative or friends to adopt them. Las Tejeras was the only destination for the Los Nuevo llegados, les just come. Well I was one of them. From the port of Algeciras, where we took our various destinations, I went to Barcelona with a friend of mine. When we arrived we immediately visited the Red Cross I was told. The building was totally occupy for temporal shelter. According to the woman, there was no space. We remained in hostel, during the day we hang around in la ramblas with tourist and boys. Hostel at that time coasted 1000 pesetas daily. We could not afford paying for more days, so the only escape was las Tijeras. We decided to change our destination boarding an other bus to Torre Pacheco. On the way to Torre Pacheco there were many constructions going on. My friend was very interested to work as steel bender and ready to stop the driver any time we meet building under construction. Along the motto way, my friend busied himself watching tipper trucks and mini buses to select his choice telling me which one he would buy for his father, uncle and himself. I could not stop laughing my friend. I wonder today if he owns a private car. In Spain only the luckiest survive, life here is a tom bola.
From Cartagena, we join an other train to Torre Pacheco, a nearby village where the ghetto was. When we entered the ghetto, it was a horrible nasty place, but the only option. My friend said he could not sleep there so he left to Cartagena where he said to have someone he knew. The next day he started to work as a steel bender. However, in las Tijeras everybody worked in fruits farm. There was an office where everybody registered. There are buses that send workers to the farm places. Sometimes the new comes only had to join the buses. When they reach at farm, they present themselves to the Forman who then would request their particulars and register them to work.
During the weekends, we would go to the nearest beach. We had the nearest as los Dolores, San Javier, torre viaje, and la manga del mar menor. We some times used to go to Cartagena. I latter joined friends in Cartagena because life in Las Tejeras was too inhuman. The ghetto was closed by the police few months after i left. In Cartagena, we could go to nightclub during the weekends in the town, attend classes and visit friends. It was a more different life. One could even have girl friend. I changed my job to construction in La manga where we reform Hotels before the summer holidays. My second friend got work as a security man in a nightclub. Few months latter, I applied for a sailing course at the seaport. When I received the sailing passport, I left to Vigo where I did some sailing courses. I was send to Santander with friends for the last course after one-year working experience. I changed the city after the course. Sailing job is the toughest I ever see, but the most interesting and dangerous sometimes.
