Movie Review: The Signal (2007)
By Cassandra Senior
The Signal is a rare mix of a gorey-bloodbath and an
intellectual thriller.
What if an eerie
transmission overtook every cell
phone, television and radio in the city? Half of the people
who hear it turn into raging, violent and uncontrollable killers--
the other half must figure out how to protect themselves and
who can be trusted.
While the story begins as another Saw with the amount of
fake blood used, it quickly develops into an intriguing
psychological satire. The Atlanta filmmaking team of David
Bruckner, Dan Bush and Jacob Gentry take turns directing
their eerie tale, which they break into three "transmissions".
Each transmission shifts its point of view to create a larger,
more meaningful story that explores dark secrets and fears as
well as jealousy and betrayal.
While Anessa Ramsey (Mya), AJ Bowen (Lewis) and Justin
Welbourn (Ben) push along the main story, Scott Poythress
(Clark) and Cheri Christian (Anna) provide much needed
comic relief, even if the comedy is black as night.
