Hubber Score
80Hubber Score AKA Author Score AKA User Score
There are two types of scoring on HubPages. One is for the individual hub, which you can learn more about here, and the other is the score for the person. The Author. The Hubber. Yes, you.
This hub is all about that scoring algorithm, how it works, and how it affects you.
What we know about Hubber Score
According to a reliable source there are certain things that can affect your HubScore, such as:
- Total number of published hubs
- The hub scores of your published hubs
- The total traffic across all your published hubs
- How recently you've published
- Your fans*
- Participation in the HubPages community (reading and commenting on other people's hubs; forum activity; flagging content violations; rating other people's hubs: thumbs up and down)
* Please note, fanning too many people can have a detrimental effect on your Hubber Score.
How your Hubber Score affects you
Some people are badly affected by a low Hubber Score. Or in some cases, not having the perfect Hubber Score. This can have side effects such as low self esteem, fixating on HubPages HQ stance on non-disclosure of their proprietary algorithm, despising people with higher scores, and looking down on people with lower scores and in some rare cases: diarrhea.
In extreme cases there have been rumors of suicide (though it may have been a perfect 100 Hubber Score auto-erotic asphyxiation celebration gone wrong).
But seriously...
If your Hubber Score is below 75, it will cause all outbound links you've put on all your hubs to become nofollow. This means a consequence of very little or no benefit in terms of search engine rankings (it is of little SEO value, Search Engine bots/spiders crawling and indexing your page will go no further... they will not follow the link).
If you were to publish duplicate content, it is given a HubScore penalty. If you were to publish a lot of duplicate content, the lower HubScores will start to have an affect on your HubberScore. If you're prolific with the duplicate content generation and you're pretty much spamming, your Hubber Score could drop like a rock to below 25. A combination of such a low Hubber Score and lots and lots of low scoring hubs will automatically put a stop to your ability to publish.
Those are a couple of the negative side effects of a low Hubber Score. On a positive note, a high Hubber Score will see you on the Best Authors list. And seriously, who doesn't want to be featured alongside the likes of Mark Knowles and the half a dozen or so hottest chicks on HubPages.
How can I increase my Hubber Score?
When you first sign up it will take a few days, maybe even a week, to see your Hubber Score grow from 0 up into the 75+ range. It will depend on how quickly you can gain a reputation (be it good or bad). If you start strong and publish original content and know how to throw on all the taps for outside traffic, you should rise fairly quickly. If you're new and publish good content. It'll take a little longer. If you sit near 0 for a week then you likely deserve it.
Don't bother making a thread in the forum asking what's wrong with your score or how to fix it. Be patient.
If you're in the 80 to 89 range you're doing well. There's no need to make a thread in the forum asking what's wrong with your score or how to increase it. Be patient. Just keep publishing quality hubs, and start thinking about ways you can promote your hubs (to get extra traffic).
If you're in the 90+ range you're doing extremely well. Don't get Hubber Score envy because someone has 100 and you don't. It doesn't mean they're a better person than you. Though come to think about it, if you are fretting over something as silly as Hubber Score they probably are more mentally balanced than you are. And if being sane isn't a good reason for someone being better than another person, then I don't know what is.
The Bottom Line
Don't fixate on your Hubber Score.
Here's the clincher... those that don't focus on it, are the Hubbers that are the most successful.
Publish quality hubs. Don't spam. Partake in the community in a respectful manner. A high score will come eventually. And by the time you're starting to make some decent coin you won't even care.

Darkside - A couple of things you've written within the above article will still escape many. For me, you've nailed the essence of how to handle the hubber score, besides offering advice as to how to raise it.
However - I believe others will read this and still feel strangled by the number. Ho hum.
This is a very informative article on hubscores. I am pretty easy going, don't worry much about scores, though I admire the one's that have achieved 100 score ranking, they generally are very prolific writers (at least the ones I have seen).
Enjoyed reading, wish I would have found it earlier, looking forward to reading other helpful hubs...
Hubber Score Envy? That is funny! I think the most important factor in a hubber score is pure "genuineness" ( is that a word?) Just be yourself and have some fun and it will reflect in your score....
shucks
Thanks for another informative hub,I appreciate it.
I would assume if you share it out to digg and these sources the traffic would raise your score?
Digg traffic would. But like any community, make sure you submit a page (and not a lot of them) that you think the community will crave. Otherwise don't be disappointed if they don't dig it.
Phew! That's a relief! And there was me thinking it reflected peoples age!
I almost retired!
@The Bard, no, it's not a reflection of a persons age. Your Hubber Score of 33 is because you produce low quality hubs.
Hey, are you looking for a fight? Poor quality Hubs indeed!! I'll have you know that my two Hubs are the creme de la creme. I'm just not appreciated! I'm misunderstood, I have an inferiority complex, I try hard but I....well...I suffer from depression and anxiety...my psychiatrist said so...and I'm not an Australian and you're not helping!! Cheek!
I had hoped your vanity would have enjoyed the subtle reference to the age of 33 while missing the low quality jibe. But pay it no mind, it's just a Tall Poppy Syndome drive-by.
Oh! So now I'm vain! Just watch it matey!
Actually I did catch the reference and I'm just relishing in the banter. Always a pleasure, and always great to see a superb Hubber at work (even though my modest offerings are better!).
Nevertheless, this is a great Hub, and I'm an avid follower of your Roman series as well. Best regards old pal! (I look forward to your score being 100 - I'll send you a telegram!)
Now I know....good hub and info....thanks! :)
Do they still do telegrams? Maybe you can send a twittergram.
darkside, I peeked in here because, at times, I have become a bit obessive about my hubscore. Then when it falls, I quit worrying about it. I'm better off not hitting the high numbers. for my health.
I love your hubs. They are so informative. Thanks
dori
Wise words oh Dark One and very helpful for newbies, nicely explained.
I enjoyed this article. Very witty and informative. I did not know you had a sense of humor. :-)
Darkside, I feel much better about my hubscore now! I do worry (too much) about my score, traffic and many others things to improve my hubs. Very imformative and you brought me some peace...Thanks!
As a newbie I thank you very much for this hub. If you are new it tells you a great deal.
Its obvious what kind of exposure you can get through using hub pages but its great that you do have to work at it. Its a nice breath of fresh air in retrospect to some of the garbage sites out there.

Hi - thanks for the clarification
thanks for the info i am looking forward to join hubpages
The score is importent to feel some confidence in keeping up my writing. If low score is contineous I feel it's no use trying to do what I can't do,which is good writing.
Very informative. Thanks darkside
Very helpful; and a little humorous too! lol I like it. Thanks for the answer to my question.
Great hub, thanks for inserting a little humor here and there. You did clarify some questions I've had. So, thank you.
Thanks for the information. I have a 93 I guess that means I must be doing well! Awesome. thanks
:) Happy to see my own hubscore in the 90's within a week :) helpful hub.
great post
Though I am not worried about my hubscore, I followed a link here from the forum. Brilliant to be able to take this subject and make it so amusing. I loved it.
Hi Darkside,
Hmm hubscores similar to things like top 100 lenses on Squidoo much the same kind of thing. I did a crackpot thing I eliminated my lens about Ruth Nunez who played ugly betty in Spain (made another lens UglyBetty) and put the title and url into English it practically has no views now. Before it had loads of traffic even though it was written in English lol. Feel like giving up no chance I can write much more freely about something I see most days and its quite funny. My lens about Ruth Nunez made me the most cash alas now it does not at the moment.I don´t care about hubscores or being a squidoo nobody I just love writing thats all. I care about being me first. I´m a real dud at writing sales pages lol.
Have a great Summer everyone take care out there.
Sue.xxx
Thanks for the hub, darkside. I've only been here for two weeks and, admittedly, one of my favorite pasttimes whenever I'm in hubpages is looking at my score (kind of pathetic really). After the first week, I started going away from my site and really looking at more and more hubs, such as this one. This week my favorite pasttime in hubpages is reading what's inside the forums. Next week, we'll see.
I have a question. What if you don't write anything for a whole month, will that affect your Hubscore? I see I'm still obsessed with Hubscore but I really need to know. Thanks!
Thanks for such a valuable information.
Actualy i am serching for the information, i got this hub from your forum reply.
Many of points are cleared right now.
Good overview - I'm still mystified why an Author score could drop 55 points overnight (!?!) I had published a new hub two or three days ago, and my hub scores still seem okay, but yikes....
Another great hub, thanks a lot for the information.
Thank you for sharing this information. It is very helpful for new users like me.
well now I understand what that 22 means on my profile pic.
I just published my first Hub. Seems I have much to learn yet!
Thanks for the info! :)
I'll try not to be too jealous of your 96. Don't want to wind up getting diarrhea worrying over it! ;0)
An excellent hub with useful info for all who are new at Hubpages. Great work! :)
This is just the article I needed to read starting out. Thank you!
I will take your advise to heart. I will not sweat the hub score and just continue to put original good content on the hub. Thanks good advise.
Thanks so much for helping me understand about these scores. I really appreciate it! :)
I will not fixate. I will not fixate. I will just keep writing and not worry about my author score.
But I will be kind of puzzled as to why it tanked so badly.
Sophia
Thanks. Best hub I've read yet about the scoring process. Detailed but not boring. Humorous yet informative.
This was really helpful thanks.
Very informative Hub. I am not too worried about hub scores. I just don't want to go into the spam range. This answered the questions I was about to ask.
It's good to see a hub like this that can answer these questions for all the newbies. Great resource, and thanks for sharing this information on hubber scores!
