HUBPAGE OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA - WHAT TO EXPECT
53Internet outside USA
It's a fact, a sad fact in truth.... Outside USA, internet development is not so consistent. To me, that live in Brazil, despite the fact that many people access daily the web, its use is misunderstood and not complete.
For instance, social bookmarkings are a revolution in web marketing, ideas propagation, publicity, etc, but here, or in any country that doesn't have English as a primary language, these tools are not used, not even known in many cases.
OK, we are the highest users of Orkut, in the whole world, but it only shows how brazilian people see internet: we google for information and use social tools as Orkut and MSN for social contact, and in many cases, that's all folks!
There are also several brazilian blogs with very good traffic and content, but the community is close to portuguese speakers, and the content is quite limited to web matters.
SEO Techniques
So, considering this reality, for us, that depend on Internet to live, its very hard to build efficient SEO strategy, cause there is not many ways to achieve links, change content, start a viral marketing, etc.
We only receive spam from other countries, but there is not improvements on this area. To give an example: there are people that still exchange links!! Another one: There are companies that still sell services of automatic submission to a bank of directories.
It's primitive and even degrading when we consider all the changes that Google determined years ago.
Another point is that for us, if we want to achieve pagerank, we cannot count with the brazilian web world, so we must start to try other fields, that to our internet use, are unexplored.
If I may present another example, I would point that if google.com has a 10 pagerank, brazilian google.com.br presents only 8.
And now... HUBPAGE
I personally think that Hubpage is very useful and gives a large amount of possibilities. It is also representative of how knowledge must be: it's free, it's fast, it's small, it has hypermedia.
So, with Hubpage you can spread your voice to the world in a simplier way, without the compromising of a blog, that demands a huge amount of time to construct, adequate, publicize, etc.
For SEO, it's also very useful, cause can give you backlinks with a good weight, that is essential to your pagerank but it is not completely free. It's "meritocracy model" demands a certain general level of points (75 to be more specific) to concede a dofollow stat to your links.
With this, you must generate a good rate of valid content, and that is where the things get harder.
First, Hubpage demands that the content must be written in English, what limits the participation of non-US persons.
Second, and most important, as you need to be seen regularly by people to increase your points (or even to sustain them), you must write content directed to a public that will not be the same as your business target.
Another aspect is that Google gives a huge importance to anchor text of links, and if I'm targeting words related to my business, as monografia, tcc, educação, etc, I loose many important possibilities, cause I won't be read if my posts will focus these words.
Non American people can't enjoy Hubpage as you can, and this makes me feel jealous.
