Dental Anxiety and Phobia

Forty-six to seventy-five percent of the population suffer from dental anxiety and phobias. Up to 14% of the population will never visit the dentist because of fear.

The dental drill is cited as the number one reason people don’t go to the dentist. The drill is a huge source of anxiety. The drill is noisy, loud, and, if the dentist makes a mistake and his hand slips, this can cause a lot of pain.

What Causes Dental Fear

People who do not visit a dentist on a regular basis report it is because of fear.

What are the fears created:

  • Fear of losing control
  • A negative past experience
  • Fear of choking
  • Fear of the dentist’s drill

Bad experiences are generally the cause of the anxiety and phobias in the dentist’s office and can trigger avoidance, depression, and anxiety.

Managing Dental Phobias

Many times dental fear and phobia is managed best through a combination of several factors.

  • Good communication with your dentist
  • Allowing yourself to be distracted
  • Being sure that your pain is well managed
  • Being skilled at relaxation techniques

To overcome these phobias, many dentists now offer hypnotherapeutic techniques and guided imagery and help those with dental phobias and anxiety feel more calm and comfortable during their appointments.

Dr. Bruce Peltier, a hypnosis expert, developed a dental phobia treatment program. If your dentist does not offer this, this is something you can do for yourself.

You will be able to hypnotize yourself to manage your dental phobias and anxiety.

This can help you get proper dental care and help you save your teeth before they get any worse. Need more information, stop by the Hypnosis Network.
