The new iPhone 3G released at almost half the price of the original iPhone by apple, is now taking over the market by storm and has set a new standard in itself in the 3G phone market. We aren't talking about market competition here as these phones are part of the same family-apple, So this hub is just a reason as to why some people prefer one phone over the other and I'd love to be as blunt as i can in making this analysis as i needn't be concerned about hurting the sentiments of brand lovers here. You'd probably be thinking about the differences that it can make at half the cost of the original phone and I'm here to show you exactly that. At half the price, it fares better than the former in ways unimaginable.

Before i begin comparison, I'd like to just highlight the features available in the two phones.

The good old iPhone 2G

  • 480 x 320 pixel 3.5 inch multi-touch display
  • 8 GB and 16 GB memory
  • 2.0 mega-pixel camera
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth

The new iPhone 3G

  • 480 x 320 pixel 3.5 inch multi-touch display
  • 8 GB and 16 GB- available in black and white models

  • 2.0 megapixel camera
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • 3G
  • Assisted GPS

Doesn't the features seem almost similar to you till now?. Anyway it does so to me. And remember the fact that one phone is at half the price of the other. So we definitely are talking about tight business here. So now we go into the differences.

The differences

Powered by the AT&T wireless, (I'm considering the ideal situations here as unlocked versions of the iPhone are making their rounds around the globe now) the two phones is setting a new standard in the electronic world.

Apple promised a device twice as fast at half the price and with better capabilities with the release of iPhone 3G in the market and the new iPhone has proved itself to be faster, more powerful and stronger than its predecessor in many ways but still there are flaws.

Camera

The fixed lens camera of the new 3G phone is not very different from that of its predecessor. Shots taken by the two camera show almost the same image sharpness. The iPhone 3G produces outdoor pics with a bluish tint, against the more naturally coloured ones produced by the original phone. The new 3G phone camera is different from its predecessor in including the geotagging (geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification meta-data to a photo) feature and third party application integration. Though the geotagging feature is available on the older iPhone, the absence of built in GPS in it makes it less likely to be precise than the new phone

Sound quality

The iPhone 3G's speaker is a little more powerful than the original iPhone's, which makes it easier to hear over ambient noise. The iPhone 3G has a new audio chip, which gives it almost a completely clean noise floor as compared to the noisier original iPhone.

GPS

one of the most important points of hardware difference between the phones is the presence of the GPS feature in the new iPhone 3G, though the feature is one of the most publicized changes from its predecessors, it does not provide full functionality of the feature and the maps software does not use typical GPS techniques for locking your current position to whats on the map

EDGE vs 3G

The inclusion of the 3G networking capabilities is the most important change underwent by the iPhone in the process of evolution. In theory, these 3G networks are capable of more than twice the speed of EDGE's but the fact that it varies from place to place makes the speed a variable factor. So apple's claim of twice the speed at half the price becomes a reality under ideal situations. By creating the iPhone 3G and then allowing AT&T to require all customers- including those in many U.S states without 3G coverage- to sign up for the more expensive $30 data plan rather than the $20 EDGE plan, Apple has out some users into a comparatively poor economic situation without giving them any performance benefit.

Several speed tests showed comaprable speeds though the iPhone 3G was on the more expensive newer 3G network.

At half the price the iPhone 3G offers better features than the original iPhone. But though it publicizes the introduction of revolutionary features. The fact that the features does not provide their full functionality definitely becomes a matter of concern. Though the 3G cellular networking is supposed to provide almost more than twice of the EDGE speeds, the test results showed comparable speeds and the 3G application agreement cost is more than that of EDGE data plan cost of $20. Though the introduction of GPS facility is another highly publicised hardware change, it comes nowhere near to giving the true functionality of a typical GPS device.

It becomes a question we have to ask ourselves- is the iPhone 3G really worth all this hype? Is it really better than the other?. I leave that to you

I agree with Andreo. I got lured in by the hype and am really starting to get sick of my iPhone. I had a BB before and am considering switching back. The iPhone is cool, but I just can't seem to adapt and with all of the hype, I feel a little let down. Should have gotten an older version... ah, well, I've made bigger mistakes than this...
