What are iPod AV cables?

iPod AV cables allow a consumer to hook their iPod up to a TV or display and use the device through it.  This means you can listen to music, podcasts or watch videos via external means instead of simply by staring at the device.  This is useful if you are on the go, want to share a photo slideshow, song or video with a group or just want to enjoy your iPod without sticking a pair of headphones into your ear.  iPod AV cables do not come in the box when you purchase the MP3 player, they have to be bought separately and have a wide range of function as well as pricing.

How to buy iPod AV cables

AV cables for an iPod come in two types: Composite and component.  Depending on the device you will be connecting the iPod to, you may need one or the other.  This again depends on what you are connecting the iPod to and what cables it needs to make that connection.  Composite cables are generally better than component ones, but it may also depend on the signal quality and type of unit the iPod will be displayed on.  If you purchase the Apple-branded AV cables, it comes with the ability to also charge the iPod while connected to an external display; this means you do not have to worry about draining your battery while showing off for family, friends, co-workers or others.

Where to buy iPod AV cables

iPod AV cables may be a little harder to find in retail locations than other iPod accessories.  They are more expensive but well worth the buy if you want to take advantage of your iPod in different ways.  You can find them at electronic-specific retailers, such as Best Buy and sometimes at Wal-Marts and Targets.  They can always be found online via Amazon.com and Apple's online store.  There are other brands on the market as well that will be cheaper in price but may not offer the same data transfer speed to make the quality of display and sound adequate for your needs.
