i will not bless you when you sneeze
62don't sneeze around me and expect me to say god bless you, i will not do it what is the reason, i need an explanation,it mean you have manners if you say god bless you an old lady told me,i grew up hearing people say many things, and i understand a lot about manners, but this one just don't make any sense to me.
you sneeze, spreading your germs all up and around and on me and i am supposed to thank you by blessing you,
i will not do it and i will not tell my children to do it either,if they want to bless someone for spreading germs they can go ahead but i will not tell them to do so.

Thank you! I hate it when people say that. It's something people do based on superstitions and urban legends. Your heart doesn't miss a beat when you sneeze, your soul doesn't fly out of your body, and your eyes won't pop out if you hold them open. I also will not say thank you when people bless me for sneezing.
Actually the term "Bless you" was born when the bubonic plague was killing off most of Europe and the pope issued a recommendation that all pray continuously to be saved from it. Sneezing was seen as one of the first signs of plague so "God Bless You" was aimed at them in the hope that they would not come down with the plague. I agree with your sentiment about not blessing germ mongers...just so long as you are teaching your kids to say "excuse me" when they do sneeze.
I don't care how, when, where etc. the term "bless you" started, all I feel is that its rude NOT to receive or say bless you after a sneeze. Why wouldn't you want to be "blessed"! If I'm about to come down with something like a cold, etc. then bless me!! And if you sneeze I'll bless you!! what's so hard about that. And I totally agree with gredmondson that sneezing is uncontrollable. So spare me with the "I'm spreading my germs around" notion. So long as I'm sneezing into the fold of my arm or a tissue then at least I'm not trying to spread them!
There are actually three variations on the sneezing theme:
1) It was believed that you expel your soul when you sneeze, and the "bless you" or "God bless" was to keep the soul safe before it was inhaled back into the body, because Satan was always "lurking" nearby to snatch out-of-body souls.
2) It was believed that you expelled the devil when you sneezed, and the "bless you" was to keep him from re-entering your body.
3) It was believed that your heart stops for one beat after you sneeze, and the "bless you" was to make sure the heart again started to beat.
Of course, no one believes this today, but I notice when someone doesn't say "bless you" after I sneeze. It usually means that person is 1) rude or 2) athiestic and won't say anything relating to God. It doesn't bother me so much, but I know many who become quite irriatated when they don't get the "bless you" reply.
There are many examples of people who die after sneezing. Saying God bless shows love, caring and compassion towards the person who just sneezed. Love is a good thing. It is said that if you love someone you can see Jesus when you look into their eyes.
I hate that too. I wish people would stop doing it. I don't care why they do it, or where it came from. Mind your own business when I sneeze.
Thank you.
IST OF ALL I CAN SNEEZE WITH MY EYES OPEN. A SKILL I CHERISH. I SNEEZE ON A REGULAR BASIS AT WORK. I SIT IN A CUBILCLE WITH 5 PEOPLE AROUND ME AND I EXPECT SOME ONE TO SAY BLES ME EVERYTIME. IF THEY DON'T I WILL SAY "BLESS ME" OVER AND OVER AGAIN UNTIL SOMEONE SAYS IT. SOMEONE EVENTUALLY WILL AN I FOLLOW WITH A POLITE THANKYOU. OH, AND MY SMILE ONCE BROUGHT A PUPPY BACK TO LIFE.
I work with this guy and he sneezes all the time. He constantly ASKS everyone to bless him and he'll do it over and over again obnoxiously until someone says "bless you." He also says he loves the Angus Third Pounder but he's never actually eaten one. This person may need psychological help. Oh, one other thing, all puppies fear him.
Bless You... Bless Me....Thank You.....When you sneeze alone...Bless your self!
OK, if you don't like "bless you", how about "gesundheit"?
Some people really are pretentious. "bless you" is polite convention. No one really thinks your sould is trying to escape it is just polite to say. I am not all that gratefull when someone holds a door for me since it isn't hard to pull it open myself, but I still say "thanks" out of politeness. Saying Guzentite comes from the pegans, but I am not offended if someone uses it. being pretentious because you don't want to participate in an old superstition does not make you smart, or superior or refined, it just makes you arrogent.
the protocol should go like this. violators must be stoned to death.
sneeze. bless you. thanks. Thank you for thanking me for blessing you. well, thank you for thanking me for thanking you for blessing me. Amen.

fyxer, saying "God bless you," when someone sneezes is a cultural thing dating back to a time when some people believed that sneezing was releasing the devil. The "God bless you" was an antidote to the devil's presence. I think I read that somewhere. Anyway, sneeizng is uncontrollable. I think most people are a little embarassed (and a little surprised, too) when they sneeze. When someone tells me "God Bless you" when I sneeze, I feel a little more cared for.
