don't sneeze around me and expect me to say god bless you, i will not do it what is the reason, i need an explanation,it mean you have manners if you say god bless you an old lady told me,i grew up hearing people say many things, and i understand a lot about manners, but this one just don't make any sense to me.

you sneeze, spreading your germs all up and around and on me and i am supposed to thank you by blessing you,

i will not do it and i will not tell my children to do it either,if they want to bless someone for spreading germs they can go ahead but i will not tell them to do so.

I got a lot of complains about this hub some people think i have no manners others think i am just plain stupid for not saying god bless you when someone sneeze,I say god bless you for other things like when a couple tell me they have been married for thirty or forty years i say ten god bless you for that, or when people help others in any way, those things i can understand,if i'm in a room with someone that is sneezing out of control,i will pass them a tissue but i will not say bless you for sneezing.

whenever you sneeze you should apologise to everyone that is in the vicinity, that is what i do that is the right think to do,why should you suffer the posibility of catching my cold and have to bless me for it, do not make sense to me.

It's not that i don't believe or i have no manners, the point i'm trying to get across is why when someone sneeze i have to say god bless you,it should be the other way around they should say excuse me, think about it there are other body functions  i give you 2 examples--if i burp i say  excuse me--if i fart (pass gas) i say excuse me so if i sneeze, i must say whatever i want to say to the person in the vicinity, why is sneezing treated different from--burping--and farting   think about it.

If anyone have ever got a--god bless you--for burping  or farting i would like to hear from you.

fyxer, saying "God bless you," when someone sneezes is a cultural thing dating back to a time when some people believed that sneezing was releasing the devil. The "God bless you" was an antidote to the devil's presence. I think I read that somewhere. Anyway, sneeizng is uncontrollable. I think most people are a little embarassed (and a little surprised, too) when they sneeze. When someone tells me "God Bless you" when I sneeze, I feel a little more cared for.

Thank you! I hate it when people say that. It's something people do based on superstitions and urban legends. Your heart doesn't miss a beat when you sneeze, your soul doesn't fly out of your body, and your eyes won't pop out if you hold them open. I also will not say thank you when people bless me for sneezing.

Actually the term "Bless you" was born when the bubonic plague was killing off most of Europe and the pope issued a recommendation that all pray continuously to be saved from it. Sneezing was seen as one of the first signs of plague so "God Bless You" was aimed at them in the hope that they would not come down with the plague. I agree with your sentiment about not blessing germ mongers...just so long as you are teaching your kids to say "excuse me" when they do sneeze.

I don't care how, when, where etc. the term "bless you" started, all I feel is that its rude NOT to receive or say bless you after a sneeze. Why wouldn't you want to be "blessed"! If I'm about to come down with something like a cold, etc. then bless me!! And if you sneeze I'll bless you!! what's so hard about that. And I totally agree with gredmondson that sneezing is uncontrollable. So spare me with the "I'm spreading my germs around" notion. So long as I'm sneezing into the fold of my arm or a tissue then at least I'm not trying to spread them!

There are actually three variations on the sneezing theme:

1) It was believed that you expel your soul when you sneeze, and the "bless you" or "God bless" was to keep the soul safe before it was inhaled back into the body, because Satan was always "lurking" nearby to snatch out-of-body souls.

2) It was believed that you expelled the devil when you sneezed, and the "bless you" was to keep him from re-entering your body.

3) It was believed that your heart stops for one beat after you sneeze, and the "bless you" was to make sure the heart again started to beat.

Of course, no one believes this today, but I notice when someone doesn't say "bless you" after I sneeze. It usually means that person is 1) rude or 2) athiestic and won't say anything relating to God. It doesn't bother me so much, but I know many who become quite irriatated when they don't get the "bless you" reply.

There are many examples of people who die after sneezing. Saying God bless shows love, caring and compassion towards the person who just sneezed. Love is a good thing. It is said that if you love someone you can see Jesus when you look into their eyes.

I hate that too. I wish people would stop doing it. I don't care why they do it, or where it came from. Mind your own business when I sneeze.

Thank you.

IST OF ALL I CAN SNEEZE WITH MY EYES OPEN. A SKILL I CHERISH. I SNEEZE ON A REGULAR BASIS AT WORK. I SIT IN A CUBILCLE WITH 5 PEOPLE AROUND ME AND I EXPECT SOME ONE TO SAY BLES ME EVERYTIME. IF THEY DON'T I WILL SAY "BLESS ME" OVER AND OVER AGAIN UNTIL SOMEONE SAYS IT. SOMEONE EVENTUALLY WILL AN I FOLLOW WITH A POLITE THANKYOU. OH, AND MY SMILE ONCE BROUGHT A PUPPY BACK TO LIFE.

I work with this guy and he sneezes all the time. He constantly ASKS everyone to bless him and he'll do it over and over again obnoxiously until someone says "bless you." He also says he loves the Angus Third Pounder but he's never actually eaten one. This person may need psychological help. Oh, one other thing, all puppies fear him.

Some people really are pretentious. "bless you" is polite convention. No one really thinks your sould is trying to escape it is just polite to say. I am not all that gratefull when someone holds a door for me since it isn't hard to pull it open myself, but I still say "thanks" out of politeness. Saying Guzentite comes from the pegans, but I am not offended if someone uses it. being pretentious because you don't want to participate in an old superstition does not make you smart, or superior or refined, it just makes you arrogent.

the protocol should go like this. violators must be stoned to death.

sneeze. bless you. thanks. Thank you for thanking me for blessing you. well, thank you for thanking me for thanking you for blessing me. Amen.

I don't say a single word --- it's a dumb and unnecessary thing to have to do! Tough luck if it offends someone ... grow up.

I believe people say “God bless you” out of habit and not sincerity, which is why I am apposed to it. Example:A woman cut me off in the parking lot at the grocery store and 10 min. later ”blessed” me for sneezing. “Whatever lady” if you where a nice person you would have let me have that parking space.

The fact that a person will become angry if not receiving a "Bless You" after a sneeze is very disturbing. If a sneeze is so important that it needs blessing then why do we stop there. Why not bless someone when they cough. Surely a cough could be the meaning behind of a deeper illness. While we're at it let's bless the hiccup. How about blessing a burp. This seems like a reasonable idea seeing how a person could suffer from some sort of gastric disease. I came to my senses the other day while at the grocery store. A man was pushing his cart in front of me while shopping and happened to sneeze. Another shopper on a different isle shouted "Bless You' and he responded "Thank you." Mind you they were seperated by a wall of grocery items and could not even see each other. The person on the opposite lane was responding just out of habit to hearing a sneeze. Crazy! I know it doesn't hurt anyone to say "Bless you" when a sneeze occurs but when you really stop and think about it.............."Why?"

Roopesh  says:

I consider this utter BS. However, I will not tell anyone to stop "blessing me" for this. I however will not do a "Bless You". Blessings come from the Creator (plz dont bring religions inti it now) . I am not Him so I stay shut up.

Saying "Excuse me" is the way to being polite. Anything being socially acceptable does not necessarily mean that I will do it. e.g. I won't idolate actors/actresses

To say "God bless you" or just, "Bless you" to me is tatamount to saying "If your comming down with something I sure hope god sorts it out for you." so you might as well say "good luck".

In my experience it seems that god is far larger then any of the monothiestic religions wanna believe, I've observed that god always favors natural order over petty desires. Take two people with a nasty infection, give one antibiotics and the other all the blessings and prayer you can find, and see which one god favors.

A lot of people don't seem to like this idea, they like their god small and submisive to their desires, or at least the idea that it is. While at the same time professing the most humble servitude, since this doesn't make sense one has to have faith, and thats just a strong desire to not think about it too hard.

Are you friggin' kidding me? It takes that much effort to express a polite verbal gesture to someone? How LAZY and SEPARATED can we become as a nation? Hey FYXER, it must really take a lot out of you to utter three little words! You probably would NEVER tell your kids "I Love You" or you might faint from the work involved. How about we do away with "Thank You" as well? I'll stop now, as you are no doubt getting dizzy from reading......Hey, let's just use pictures in the future instead of words!!! P.S. You are supposed to cover your mouth when you sneeze to keep from spreading germs!! It works when you cough and yawn as well!!

Quite a few people took this out of context i'm not saying i don't want to be polite i'm just questioning why we say bless you when someone sneeze--

Is this a written or un written rule some where--no--so why do we do it

we see and hear someone say--bless you--when someone else sneeze and we follow,I QUESTION before i follow---

did we do everything our parents tell us to do--some things they tell us not to do while they doing it.

I dont jump because i see everyone else jumping, if i sneeze and you want say bless me thats ok---and if you don't say anything it's ok--maybe i need some nyquil or one of those halls candy--thats what i need to feel better--bless you will not make the flue go away if i'm catching one

saying bless you when someone sneeze is not one of the ten commandments

it's just words that someone said and like sheep everyone follows

if someone had said--I DON'T WANT TO CATCH YOUR GERMS--thats what we all would be saying

HAPPY NYQUIL TO YOU ALL.

You skip a heart beat when you sneeze...meaning your life time is shortened by 1 heart beat. For this reason you say "bless you" when someone sneeze.

I dont believe in that much. But in this society, you have to show other people that you care, even if you don't.

i do care for others,i do whatever i can whenever i can,but saying bless you just because someone sneeze is something i can never understand, bless you for being you,but not for sneezing.

meh  says:

brijesh, your life is shortened by one heart beat every heart beat, not every none heart beat. And you don't miss a heart beat when you sneeze you just can't sense the heart beat because your sneezing. That feeling in your chest when you sneeze is your lungs not your heart not beating.

Personally i don't say it as i don't view it as being polite just as i don't view eating meat with a salad fork as being impolite or ill-mannered. Being humble and showing gratitude is being polite.

Times change, culture changes and good manners change. Quite rightly too.

That is funny you said that. I was speaking with my coworker on this very subject. She does not believe in God or any religion - she sneezed and she asked why I didn't bless her - I said you don't believe in god or anything why should I ? She said out of common courtesy ! So I decided to go on a mission to ask what everyone thought- I'm glad I came across your web site - I'll say gezunheit next time !!

Whenever one sneezes, one misses ones heart beat for a millisecond. So, we say God Bless Ya for scientific reasons. That means you wish all well for your friend. And, that's supposed to be sign of a good human being. God Bless You!

ok we misses one heartbeat for a millisecond when we sneeze so we say god bless you---but when we cough, covered or un covered mouth we don't get acknowledgement,it's not fair,

the same energy sometimes more goes into a cough than a sneeze

This has been going on for a long time. I never told my kids to do it but they picked it up somewhere. I just looked up info on it today because I wanted to know where it came from. I have mixed emotions about it. Everyone has very good points.

Gesundheit is not a pagan originated phrase. It is the German and Yiddish word for "Health" It is the equivalent of saying "Bless You."

Shraddha  says:

my friends and I started questioning saying "God Bless you" just because someone sneezes back in the 80's, and we found out it was superstitious because people used to think you were expelling the devil. So we stopped saying it. It got too awkward and people made too many assumptions about us being atheists or something, so now that I'm older I AM saying it again, just because it's a nice thing to say. But I totally and completely agree with Fyxer - he was just using his mind and questioning, instead of doing things thoughtlessly like so many people do. We should try to start new trends like saying God Bless You when you burp or hear someone burp...or ....

it may have started with a responce to sneezing or something else. Is't this about wishing someone well, whether by a higher authority or from one caring human being to another? Why can't we extend it to coughing, farting, or even for no reason at all. Would the world be a better place if we looked for reasons to bless one another, instead of looking for reasons to putdown, humiliate and seperate ourselves from each other. If we should meet and i bless you for sneezing on me, please don't be offended, i'm just saying i care about you.

I AGREE WITH YOU @MR WHY CAN'T WE JUST BLESS EACH OTHER AND LOVE EACH OTHER FOR NO REASON AT ALL, THAT WOULD BE GREAT,INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SNEEZE,SOMETIMES I HEAR SOMEONE WITH A VERY BAD COLD OR SOMETHING--THEY ARE COUGHING SO BAD I WONDER IF THEY ARE GOING TO SURVIVE--SOMETIMES THIS PERSON IS SMOKING,BUT I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO --OR HOW TO APROACH THEM--MAYBE THEY NEED A HUG--I WILL TRY THAT ONE DAY--
