anarchism

Anarchism has populary been disregarded as a pejorative term, associated by the mainstream media machinery as a synonim to chaos, disorder, the punk movement, the squatters and the like.

The term anarchism comes from the greek "anarkho",an- meaning "no" and "arkho" meaning "chief" and means approximately, no soberanity, no reliance on any institution, basically the major expression of what was later labelled as "individualism".

The core idea in Anarchism is of a complete different nature, anarchism is against any form of domination, could it be of a sexual matter (tipically domination of women by men),or could it be of an economical matter(domination of working class by the ruling class), or could be of any kind of nature. This core idea is though to be organic in its human nature and in its preconception being a "Vorahnung" and it´s usually granted as the anti-ideology, and could be better seen in Emma Goldman´s statements described it as"natural social philosphy"

Hence the soberanity relies on the Individual, who has total control of every aspect of their life, not having to trust any form of state to take care of their business.Control is distributed locally, and the absence of a central power enables each local assembly to take its own decissions through consense and direct democracy.Volunteer cooperation, collectivism and associations are also major anarchist structures in modern anarchism.

But did this nice theoretical utopian ideas ever came to practice?

yes in deed, after some failed revolutions like the Paris Commune (1871) or Zapata´s Uprising (1910) in Mexico, it actually had its moment in the Spanish revolution (1936-37), which ended in the Spanish Civil War.

By the end of the 20th century, the 77´s punk explosion, first with squatters involved, and later in the 90´s the anti-globalization movement was also embraced by some neo-anarchists and autonom revolutioners.

The idea is that the anarchist revolution takes place at a personal and local level before reaching other stages. A good example of this is found in the film posted on this hub, where it is shown the american heritage of european root´s anarchism, settled by european inmigrants moving to the USA. The idea behind is how norht americanvalues like self reliance and independence are way far rooted in the american dream, though in a mainly unconsicous way.

Society needs a seasoning of anarchy, or iconoclasm, as part of the challenge to established structures. The problem comes when you achieve the initial aim, demolition, and have to move forward to something new. Anarchists, like punks, don't make the best builders.

that´s true paraglider, you never can predict what can happen the day after. But please don´t compare anarchism wiht the punk movement, this is a common mistake, anarchism goes far beyond. The major problem, in my opinion, in actual society is conformism and lack of guts to change the actual state of things, the revolution can only take place at a personal level. Anarchism did in deed work in parts of history, like for instance the Spanish revolution, giving equal chances to acces education and work to everyone, giving equal rights to men and women, sharing the resources and taking responsabilities and decissions to a local level. As you see nothing to do with chaos. It could be also called direct democracy, the real democracy.
