The importance of black and white photography
Black and white photography is one of the most beautiful forms of art. As photographers go digital, the possibility that this art form will be lost to the technological revolution is a very strong possibility. However, black and white photos are an important part of picture development and the history of photography. Some photos just look better in black and white. Originally, black and white photographers were developed that way. Now, with digital technology, any color picture can be converted to black and white with a graphics arts program. Anybody can take advantage of creating a good black and white picture from something they took with their own digital camera.
Tips for taking black and white pictures
The easiest way to get a great black and white photograph is to shoot the original image in color. Then, edit it on your computer. By using a program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, you can convert the picture to gray scale and play with the contrast to get it just right.
Most digital cameras also offer an automatic black and white feature. By enabling it, the camera will automatically find the right composition to use to get the best quality out of the photograph. This allows you to just point-and-shoot and go from there.
The best time to shoot a black and white picture, whether converting from color or using a computer is when there is very low contrast. Dark, overcast or otherwise dreary days are the best time to shoot these pictures. This type of low contrast allows for a wider ranger of grays and whites to be used during conversion. This can create a beautiful contrast for the black and white image that brings out details you would not normally see in a color image.
When composing a black and white shot, you want to focus on the shapes and textures of the picture instead of the color you would normally see. Colors can lead the eye to what you want the observer to see, but in the case of a black and white shot, you have to rely on the tones, shapes and textures to do that for you. The more black and white pictures you take, the easier it will be to find these in your pictures.
The future of black and white photography
When it comes to the future of black and white photography, it is up to picture takers to understand the value of a good picture. Black and white pictures are not a thing of the past, and the more people understand the beauty behind a good dark picture, the more people will be willing to give it a shot.
Many consider black and white photography to be a dying art. This stems from the belief that some of the best images came from darkroom development and most people do not want to jump on their computer and create a black and white image. They want to work the details in a darkroom chemical pool and find just the right contrast the old-fashioned way. As digital photography becomes even more prominent and acceptable to old school photographers, more people will adapt to and use their computers to create black and white images a well as shoot them on their own time in the real world.

Very interesting hub, carpesomediem. I'm a new Hubster and am working on my first hub. It's about building a darkroom sink for those who want to develop and print their own black& white photographs. I'll be writing other hubs about traditional photography. I look forward to reading your other hubs. Thanks
