If you have been looking around online to see what homeschooling is really like, then you have more than likely heard the term "cyberschool" used. For those of you who did not know what the term meant when you heard it, you should know that this is simply an educational program wherein normal curriculum is taught via the Internet.

There are actually 2 types of cyberschooling as well:

1."Asynchronous" cyberschooling is when your child interacts with the teachers and the other students via email and forums.

2."Synchronous" cyberschooling is when everyone, including your child, interacts with one another in real-time virtual classrooms. This works through videoconferencing and a webcam. Depending upon what software is used, either text or microphones will be used.

Your cyberschool's curriculum has been thought out and tried in order to make sure that it will work. You do need to understand that this is not the same curriculum that is taught in traditional school settings though. Nevertheless it will cover the main subjects of English, math, history, geography and science. Many times Bible is also taught in these cyberschools. So, this is something that you will need to consider if you are not a Christian. Another good thing about these cyberschools though is that you are able to choose electives for your child to take. So, if there is something that you would like to teach your child, then a lot of times you can choose to allow the cyberschools to teach it for you. These electives can range from college prep courses to something like an in depth look at the history of 1 of the 50 states. And since all of the work your child will need for his cyberschool education is online, you can download it and make backups of it.

While many people believe that cyberschooling is a great way to ensure that their child is learning what he should know at his age, there are some definite advantages and disadvantages that must be considered.

The advantages include:

1.Your child can learn in the safety and comfort of your own home.

2.Socialization is different here but it is not lacking. So if you are concerned about your child's socialization, this may be a good option for you.

3.If you want to include projects in your homeschool, cyberschooling will allow you to do this.

4.There is time allotted for presentations via the synchronous method of cyberschooling.

5.There is room for you to be able to customize your own lesson plans. This way you can help your child do better by focusing upon what it is that he really needs to learn. As such, the curriculum can be centered around your child's particular needs. This is one of the greatest advantages of homeschooling and it is also available in cyberschools as well.

The only disadvantage to cyberschooling your child is that he must be motivated to learn by himself because learning cannot be enforced over the Internet. In the end though, the choice is really up to you. While this method of homeschooling may work for some, it may not work for others. This is something that you must decide for your child.
