If you have ever talked to someone that has done this job, you may have heard the stories of how it was a two or three day job that never seemed as though it was going to end.  While that can definitely happen in certain situations, there is a way around it so that you can install hardwood floors in one day.

Take Accurate Measurements

In order to make this work, you are going to have to have everything in place once you start.  To do this, you will have to have accurate measurements to get the right amount of supplies.  If you make a mockup of the house and do detailed measuring, you are well on your way.  However, when you are purchasing your wood for the floor, keep in mind that you are going to have about 10-15% waste.  Come up short and the whole project gets put on hold until you can get more flooring.

Make Room

One of the biggest challenges you will face to keep everything flowing is space.  You can obviously not lay down flooring if there are things in the room.  If you are doing every room in the house, you will not have anywhere to keep everything so renting a storage container is always an option.  If you don’t, you are going to be wasting a lot of time moving things from one room to the next.

Stain & Finish

One of the most time consuming parts of the job is the staining and finishing of the wood. Because you have to apply multiple coats and wait for them to dry, this stage can often take 3 or more days to complete. Luckily, there are products available to use that totally eliminate the need to do this altogether.

Engineered hardwood flooring is real wood that has already has the finish applied to it. This means that you can totally skip the staining process and as long as you are careful when you are installing it, the floor will be ready to go the moment you nail down the last piece.

Another type of flooring to consider is laminate hardwood flooring. This is a fabricated product that is not actually wood, but it has the appearance of wood and is much easier to work with. This is a product that is often used in areas that will see a lot of traffic or water such as a kitchen or bathroom. They are very easy to clean and like the engineered hardwood flooring, once the installation is complete, the job is done.

Have Everything in Place Before You Start

By taking all of this into consideration and having everything in place, you can truly finish the job in just one day.  By using some convenience products and having everything in place from the very beginning, you avoid wasting time and the more time committed portions of the project.  This means that the floor goes down and you get to enjoy it when everyone else in on their hands and knees cleaning up dust and applying stain.  Just be nice and offer them a beer as you sit there and watch them work.
