How to Install a Second Internal Hard Drive
76
Installing a second hard drive can be simple, but depending on your computer set-up, it may be more involved than the basic steps shown below. This guide is for installing a second IDE-based hard drive disk into a desktop computer. The instructions may not be the same for every computer, so make sure to check your manual along with specifications for your particular computer before following any of these steps.

Use an anti-static wristband or other means of grounding yourself to avoid hurting yourself or your computer. This guide will assume you already have the proper hard drive disk to install, if you are not sure, do not proceed any further.
You want to set the new hard drive disk into the slot it will go into, most times; this is either above or below the primary hard drive disk. If your computer already has a second set of IDE cables built in, you can use those instead of the ones that came in the box to make it easier. You can plug these cables in securely in the slot in the back of the hard drive disk that is facing out. Pay attention to how they fit into the primary drive and mimic the response on the secondary drive. Once those are in securely, you will want to plug in the power cable that is part of your power supply into the new disk. If you computer already has a spare installed, you can use this one otherwise you will need to use the one that came with the new hard drive disk.
Make sure all cables are securely fit and from there, you should be able to reboot your system and the BIOS will recognize the new drive and ensure it was installed properly. If the system does not boot, your connections could be faulty or the hard drive disk could be bad. If that is the case, power down the system, check the connections one more time and reboot. If it is still not working, the hard drive is bad, and you will want to get a new one to install. Your computer will automatically assign a letter to the new drive, and it will be ready for use if it otherwise works.
As stated, this is just a basic overview of how to install an IDE-based hard drive. Each computer is different, and you should follow both the instructions in the manual that came with the computer along with what came with the hard drive. Otherwise, you could damage your computer and primary hard drive beyond repair.

Carpesomediem,
I took an A+ class in grad school. Thefinal exam was to take a computer completely apart and lay all the pieces out on a table. Then we all swapped tables and had to put back together one that someone else took apart. It was a pretty cool feeling to be able to that. I don't think I could do it now. But, now I know where to come should I ever need to.
Thanks!!
