Installing A Dog Door

Do you want a way to have your cat or dog have access to go outside or around closed doors? You can put in a pet door for your pets. Getting a good handyman can do wonders for your pet door pet project. Planning on doing it yourself is a good idea and I can help give you a little advice. This is a mid level project so you need to be confident in your abilities. You need to be proficient in using all hand tools and several power tools. If handling power tools and hand tools is right up your alley, you can rest assured that you should be able to complete this type of project.

Your first step will be in purchasing the correct size door that fits your pets body size. Online stores and home depot style stores should carry the perfect pet door you need. Check to see if your pet door comes with a wall mount kit and if it does not, purchase one from the same manufacturer. This part will help your pet from getting stuck inside of your walls when they take a step through the door. This kit is also called a tunnel and it connects the two halves of the door together.

Installing the door is the next step now that you have the pet door and tunnel kit in hand. You will now have to find out where the wall studs are and this is easily accomplished with a electronic stud finder. Most pet door are made to fit in between the 16 inch spacing in between each stud of the home. The height of your door should be set at a height where your pet can maneuver in and out easily. The area that needs to be cut out needs to be prepared by using the template that came with the product and marking it. Now you can cut out the area you marked on your template. What should be done now is cleaning out your cutting area. Now start installing your tunnel kit. The extra tunnel kit now needs to be trimmed off. Get the doors in place and screw them together. You might need some extra help for this step because it is easy to put the door in with another set of hands. You now need to seal the inner and outer doors with some caulk to make your job look great and it also will keep moisture out.

The pet door is now done. You can get more ideas like this one by going to my pet door website.
