Installing a WordPress blog can be easy if you follow instructions and know a little bit about uploading to a web server. If you lack the experience when it comes to web servers, FTP and uploading, you might want to sign up for a free WordPress blog via their web site as opposed to trying it yourself just yet. If you are ready to go, the following instructions are the easiest way to install a WordPress blog on a private server.

First, you need the following components to install your WordPress blog: Access to your private web server, a FTP program, Notepad or WordPad, a web browser and the latest installation of WordPress. There are two ways to upload WordPress to your server via FTP. You can either unzip the installation and upload the folder itself to your server or you can upload the zip file with installation files and unzip it on your server. If you find that your FTP client is timing out, uploading the zip file will be the easiest way to go about the install process.

Next, you will want to create a new database for the WordPress blog. You can do this via your Admin Control Panel from your web server; make note of the information. Once the database is created, you will want to open the wp-config-smaple.php file in Notepad. It might be easier to drag and drop it to the desktop for simpler uploading when you are done editing it. Simply fill in the information from your database creation, save it and then change the file to wp-config.php. Upload the file to your web server, delete the other wp-config-sample.php, and then navigate to your blog directory in your web server.

If everything was uploading correctly, the database information inserted properly, you should be able to walk through the WordPress installation. It will ask you some questions, work its way through what it needs to do for installation and then you will be able to begin tinkering around with the settings. Once you get everything set, you will be able to enjoy the new installation of your WordPress blog and everything is has to offer.

Great hub. Don't forget it also doubles up as a great cms also. I use it both for cms and blogging. Instead of having multiple installs of wp, I am using the MU version. Thats only been recently. I've used the standalone version and I believe with wp 2.6 you do not have to fire up notepad to edit. All you really have to do is fire up your web browser and go to the webaddress that you uploaded your files to. It should have an install screen asking for your database information. You can do it the other way too, but now there are choices.

Thanks!

I just installed 2.6, and since I've installed WordPress before, I just automatically did the manual edit of the wp-config file (since I'm used to that!) It's good to know they're making it even easier for new users to get started without as much hassle!
