What do consumers want?

A lot of consumers who do not want to leave their cell phone provider are opting to purchase an iTouch. While the iTouch is similar to the iPhone, there are some things the device cannot do that the iPhone can. While both units are based upon the same programming, operating system and functionality, they both have benefits to a user deciding to go with one or the other.

iPhone vs. iTouch comparison

While both the iPhone and the iTouch offer application use, the iPhone utilizes a lot more active memory than the iTouch does. This means that the more applications you have, the potential for a slower reaction time from the iPhone occurs. Since the iPhone is constantly utilizing free memory for functions as a cell phone, this leaves less memory available for using applications. While the iPhone reacts well to the pressure, it can freeze up more frequently than the iTouch will since the latter does not need to utilize memory in conjunction with a cell phone network.

Obviously, the iTouch does not function as a cell phone device, so this is the primary difference between it and the iPhone. However, since the device does not work as a cell phone, this leaves a lot of hard space and memory for use with applications, music and videos. This gives you the opportunity to take advantage of storage space and utilize the device as more of an all-inclusive unit. Since most people use the iPhone as just a phone, they yet to discover all it can do whereas with the iTouch out of the box, you can take it wherever you want to go.

What should you do?

If you cannot or do not want to invest in an iPhone, investing in an iTouch might be a worthy alternative. While it does not replace the iPhone, it gives consumers the chance to take advantage of what the iPhone was meant to offer. Since both devices are customizable, you have the chance to do what you want with the device, install your own applications and use it on the go no matter where you are.

One thing that seems like it would be simple enough would be to offer the iPhone in the same memory configurations as the iTouch. I've held off on upgrading my 1st version iPhone to a 3G because I'd really like to get a 32GB version, but it's not out there yet.

i prefer the itouch for the following facts

1. No monthly payment on the cellphone network which is RLY expensive

2. The itouch costs a bit less

3.No cellphone contract

4.smaller

Does the iTouch have aGPS? iTouch for me would be more expensive as I would get the $199 8GB iPhone 3G... but there would be the cell phone contract fees...of which I already have with my old phone that I would get rid of.I'm guessing the iTouch doesn't have GPS...but not sure.

The iTouch does not have dedicated GPS, mostly because it only connects to the Internet via WiFi. You can utilize the Maps feature to plot a route while connected to a network, but unless you write those directions down, you're going to be SOL once you're out of wireless range.

so itouch has no monthly payments after the purchase? and that means free internet??

carpesomediem profile image

carpesomediem  says:

peyton:

There are no extra payments associated with the iTouch after initial purchase. As long as you have access to a WiFi network, you can use the Internet on it; however, after you move out of range, you will no longer have acess to the web.

The iTouch (2nd Gereration) can be used as a phone within a WiFi network using Skype and an external headset.

You can do all of those things with just the iTouch, but you have to be connected to a Wi-Fi network to do it. It doesn't come with access to the AT&T network like the iPhone does.

I'd go with the 16 or 32 GB model, and like I said above, the iTouch doesn't come connected to the AT&T network. You would have to pay for a cell phone plan and get the iPhone to do that.

Honestly, it depends on who is offering the best sale at the time you're buying. One day it might be Amazon, the next Best Buy or TigerDirect. It really is the luck of a the draw if you want a brand new iTouch or iPhone. However, most brick and mortar retail stores do offer price matching, so that might be a way to get it at a cheaper price if you can't wait for shipping.

I am debating whether to get the itouch. I have the ipod nano chromatic but i love the apps that the itouch comes with. Then again, I do love the idea of having everything in one with the iphone. Is the iphone really worth it?

Well, I just got an iTouch and I love it so far. Yes, the fact that you have to be near a wi-fi spot to use the 'net is it's biggest downfall, I just cannot see paying the mandatory, minimum $30 media package above and beyond the normal voice packages for using the iPhone. That's more than I pay for Internet access through my cable company! If it were something like a $10-$15 unlimited data fee (which is the case for non-smart phones from AT&T). But $30 a month is ludicrous.

So I'll enjoy the apps, games and music offline (including streaming MP3s through the bluetooth-enable stereo in my car).

When I'm around a wi-fi point. I'll use it. Heck of a lot better than having to lug along my laptop just to check my e-mail from a hotel, Starbucks, McD's, etc.. When I can do the same thing with the iTouch.

Not knocking the iPhone (I'd love to be able to stream Internet radio via bluetooth through my car radio), but $30 is way too much. More power to those that can afford it.

sara  says:

okay well i would like to get the iphone but i am not willing to pay the $30 a month to use internet. would i just be able to use Wi-Fi as my internet conection?

hannah  says:

Itouch is handier, and you don't have to pay every month. You can get apps for 99 cents or so, but thats it. you can get free phones at stores with a low monthly fee. Iphone's monthly fee is pretty expensive. Anyone have any questions?

hannah  says:

Emily:

I think the iphone isn't worth it. Itouch is smaller, easier to work with, and is cheaper, and the bills for the iphone for using the phone part of it is very expensive. I recommend Itouch for you.

People saying they like the iPhone more for reasons other than the fact it is a phone as well are insane (e.g "The interface is nicer). The iTouch is basically an iPhone stripped of phone functions. Nothing else has been removed or changed except for phone related functions.
