Apple iPhone 3G

Pros and Cons about the Apple iPhone 3G

It's probably the most hyped up consumer electronics gadget this year. Apple's iPhone is finally available in the US and Canada. In Canada it is only available through Rogers Wireless stores. In the US they are available through AT&T stores. All iPhone 3G's must to be activated by these two exclusive GSM network providers, through the purchase of long-term contracts. Let's take a quick peek at what's under the hood of the iPhone 3G.

Pros:

  • It's wireless on steroids - It has 10 different radios; Wi-Fi to surf the net; Bluetooth for hands free headsets; GPS to navigate or get to a location; and high-speed wireless connectivity through Rogers wireless network.
  • The 3.5 inch screen is simply gorgeous - . It is slightly warmer in color temperature, slightly brighter (even when considering decay over time) and the daylight viewing is better. When you turn the iPhone sideways, the built-in "accelerometer" automatically flips the screen horizontally.
  • While the iphone fits comfortably in your hand, the screen makes it so easy to navigate through the iPhone's multitude of features. With a simple touch of your fingertips, you can scroll through your contacts like a digital rolodex. You can pinch and expand to zoom into your photos. Tap to preview and play music via the iTunes Wi-Fi store.
  • Computer capability internet surfing - It has an html-based safari browser with support for photos and videos.
  • It's an iPod - You can store up to 8GB or 16GB (depending on the model) of music, podcasts, audio books, photos and videos - copied over when synchronized with your Windows or Mac's iTunes software. But, unlike previous iPods, the iPhone has a built-in speaker.
  • It has a multitude of applications - Apple opened up the platform for 3rd party developers. The "AppStore" allows users to download thousands of applications to run on the iPhone.
  • Stable Operating System - The OS is rock solid. Once you want to get out of a program, you just tap the solitary "Home" button at the bottom of the iPhone. You don't have to look for an "X" to tap in order to close it.
  • Maps at your fingertips - type in any location in the Google maps search field and you'll instantly see push pins fall onto the satellite image. Tap the closest "point of interest" and the program will provide the phone number, website, address and directions.

Cons:

  • It may take some time getting used to the keyboard especially if you have stubby fingers.
  • There is no video capture or recording.
  • There is no improvement on the two-mega pixel camera.
  • There is no MMS support - You can take a picture and email to someone, but you can't send it to a friend's phone with a message.
  • There is no voice-activated dialing.
  • There is no voice activated recording feature.
  • Google Maps limitation - It does not allow audio based turn by turn instructions, like a full blown GPS device.
  • There is no copy and paste feature
  • No expandable memory cards?
